The Hyper-critical" Genre-Hater" versus the open-minded Quality-Seeker

It's the main argument on this board, as I see it. Those who have a very specific aesthetic, hate a genre and live to ridicule it with hyper-critical zeal---- versus those who seek quality throughout multiple genres and tend to try to find the best of each genre.
I keep it simple man, I just love music. Not a specific aesthetic. I prefer the music at the party to the people at the party. For me, it's the main event. So anytime I run into somebody that truly feels music, that truly loves music,I tend to defer to their passion for a specific band or musician, rather than tear it down because I prefer a different genre or style.
I tend to start with the premise that there is quality music in every genre. That the best musicians playing in that genre are worthwhile and should be supported. And that if I don't like it, maybe I don't really "get" it and should either listen more closely, or realize it's just not my thing, and move on without comment.
I dig XTC and the Allman Brothers. Neil Young and Neil Finn. Steely Dan and Allison Krause. Johnny Cash and Joe Strummer. Frank Sinatra and Freddy Mercury. And 1000 more. For completely different reasons. If I started a thread on any of these, two dozen people would lose their shite and tell me they suck and I'm low-brow for not preferring their more high-brow stuff. I'm not sure I understand this instinct to hate on music you don't personally prefer. People tend to like what they like.
Now shut the hell up, Elaine. The song.....

Was there a question for us to answer in all that?

who would be hating on these artists?

As a rule, I like to go by the old adage. there are two types of music... good and bad (I've mellowed with age)..
My tastes are all over the map in terms of genre, but I am pretty specific in what I like and know it when I hear it (right away)... Though I would say most bands fall into the "I don't like it, but don't hate it" category...
There are very few bands that fall into the "hate" category, relatively speaking... and a few genres of music I generally don't like..
Hell, I don't really listen to the radio, so I'm usually way behind in these things, but I can even fall for some cheesy top 40 hit that appeals to lowest common denominator of music enjoyment...

Considering that none of the artists you listed would get much hate on this board or in most other circles, how about you list some artists that you enjoy that are more polarizing.
Then we can give you an honest assessment

I am listening to Elton John Madman Across The Water this morning and wondering how many Elton John -haters have ever even heard it. But I know the "gay, old-dude" comments are never far away.
13 year old Pimp Jr. is consumed by The Allman Brothers and Abbey Road of late, having moved on from Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. None of his friends have heard any of it. But they know they hate it and that ...wait for it..."it sucks".
15 year old Pimpette Jr is listening to Neutrel Milk Hotel and Sufjan Stevens. The smaller it is, the more intimate, the more she loves it. When it gets reduced to a dude in a hat with a guitar she's happiest. I respect that. I get that.I don't feel compelled to tell her "it sucks" because I saw Stevie Ray in Austin in 1985.
Guys like Blue Velvet define themselves by what they hate and who they hate, trolling the board non-stop, mocking people who don't prefer his aesthetic, instead of talking about great music.
It gets old trying to make your way past all the Taste-Nannies.

It's great that you have an open mind towards music but the people don't are still allowed to show their opinion, if it is truly their opinion and not a troll. Real discussions are not supposed to be filled with one person agreeing with the next over and over again. There isn't anything interesting about it.
instead of talking about great music.
People joke a lot around here but there are several legitimate music discussions as well as a strong music recommendation presence.

Question.... is there not one rap song that you have liked over the years?
I'll admit I don't really listen to that genre of music, but have some old favorites from my teenage years... though I think the genre is very different these days..

I dig De La Soul and Fundamentalist Christian rap. And anything associated with Ali G.

But like that other unkillable monster (heavy metal) it would not die, and with the advent of thug lyrics/culture it became the musical black plague (no pun intended).
I like Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues". It's essentially a R&R version of an old Woody Guthrie talking blues -- that is, a rap. But what if Dylan had written only in that style? That's what rap is -- a novelty that somehow took over the mainstream
