Why does the NFL Pick'em close on Thursday?

I know it's my mistake for not getting my Denver pick in on time, but why does that lock down the whole rest of the week? I understand it says the date it locks down, but it is a little frustrating knowing that I'd be tied for 11th excluding the Denver game.
