Republican Rep. Bill Cassidy appears to be in a strong position to unseat Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu in Louisiana, but he is likely going to have to wait until December to do it.

A new USA TODAY/Suffolk University poll shows neither Cassidy nor Landrieu taking the 50% required to avoid a runoff in the crowded Nov. 4 race. The poll of 500 likely voters found 36% supporting Landrieu, 35% supporting Cassidy, 11% supporting Tea Party favorite Rob Maness and 18% undecided or backing other minor candidates. The poll was conducted in association with The (Lafayette, La.) Daily Advertiser and WWL-TV.

But in a head-to-head matchup, Cassidy has a 48%-41% edge over Landrieu with 11% undecided.

According to David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center in Boston, "Maness supporters are basically a holding place for Cassidy … the unfavorables are 89% for Landrieu among the Maness voters." That means that in a runoff, Cassidy can count on nearly all of those voters to jump to his side, assuming they return to the polls in December.

I hope he is a small government conservative and will work to reduce government.

Given his campaign all I know about him is that he does not like Obama.

Sho nuff

That is one thing I love about this board - people are extremely knowledgeable about the elections and for someone who doesn't (nor claims to) know much about them, I appreciate the insight from those who do

Edit: Getting a read on the KY race seems next to impossible with the daily conflicting news stories.

That's Enough to get him in but no guarantee of sensible government. Unfortunately. But it is the better option.

This election was always a repudiation/referendum against Mary and as long the GOP candidate wasn't anything crazy and had a decent record like Cassidy is, Mary was going down no matter what. If Bill Cassidy is not conservative enough or performing to the required standards of his constituents, we'll deal with that problem six years from now.

I still wouldn't be surprised to see the Republicans screw this one up.

It's like being an Aints fan in the old days. Even when it looks like things are going well, you're just waiting to see how they manage to step on their dicks.

It's virtually a lock that Cassidy will win. Louisiana is now partisan enough to where the democrat would have to be a better candidate AND the Republucan would have to be caught in a scandal.

Doesn't mean it'll be a landslide but 52 to 55 percent will now go republican pretty much no matter what.

The 2015 Governor race will be much more interesting.

I have complete faith that Cassidy will stick his foot in his mouth during the runoff campaign.

The guy is a brilliant and compassionate physician but he has difficulty communicating especially when video cameras are pointed at him.

He sounds great and knowledgable when I hear him on the phone when he does a town talk.

Meet Cassidy a few times during a visit to DC. Very personable in real life and went out of his way to meet our group.

We visited Marys office as well and she was too busy to meet. Our group represted commercial construction in south eastern Louisiana. She has never met with our group and we have been visiting DC every year she's been in office.

Tells me all I want to know

That she's less likely to meet with lobbyists?

. No, it's just that the Lobbyists usually go to her house on tony Capitol Hill. That's why she has two dishwashers.
