Starting a new gig next week where I'll be doing a bunch of customer presentations as well as working some in datacenters. I'll be flying alot and working out of hotels mostly.

So that begs the question....which to buy? Pro or Air?

13" retina Macbook Pro simply because I would not buy an Air right now.

Honestly, I go to the apple store and I don't see the difference a retina display makes.

But my eyes have always been bad.

not only is it not retina, it's due for a major redesign. It's been out 6 years now and it's still the original form factor. I've said many times on here that my 2011 Air is the best computer I've ever owned. I still would not buy one right now.

Not to mention Yosemite (and all Apple OS's from now until the end of time) is made for retina. It doesn't look bad on my shitty 1440x900 screen, but it looks great on retina screens.

Staring at the desktop isn't gonna show you much difference since it probably scales pretty well. The real difference will be when you start looking at high-res photos and videos.

To OP, if you get the Pro, don't get the bottom-of-the-barrel model with the HDD.

Get the pro, time machine the drive to an external usb, drop the crap drive the comes with for an SSD drive and you have beefed up macbook air.

Are you telling him to get the non-retina MacBook Pro? That's the only one that comes with a HDD. OP, DO NOT get the non-retina MacBook Pro. It hasn't been updated in 2 years.

The retina MacBook Pros come with an SSD standard.

I like my 13 Inch air with 256 SS drive. Bought it new a little under a year ago.

It is very light and the battery life is excellent. A few short trips I didn't even break out the charger.

The latest MacBook Pros are nearly as light as the Airs.

can you still fry an egg on them? I love my 15" pro, but when it's time to get a new one I'll have to give more thought than I'd like to based on heat.

No, the SSD and Haswell chips do not get as hot as years past.

i have an air and it runs great. I didn't think I'd like it as much as I do. If you are doing technical work in the data centers like running vms and troubleshooting the jump up to the pro. If it's just PowerPoint and surfing the net then an air will work great.
