Was there any context to the statement? If he had said, if you had direct intimate contact with the sick patient and develop a fever then I would understand why you should go straight to the ER. However, if it was just if you develop a fever go straight to the ER, he just made the panic a million times worse and I am glad I am not working in the ER in NYC this weekend.
