BATON ROUGE - The East Baton Rouge Metro Council approved petitions Wednesday to annex several portions of land in the southern part of the parish into the city limits of Baton Rouge.

The property includes the L'Auberge Casino, LSU Ben Hur Research Substation and Fire Training Ground, as well as several other businesses in the area.

In related news, the EBR Registrar of Voters won't begin the SG petition signature verification process until after early voting ends for the Nov. 4 elections and she plans on asking for help from the Sec of State's office for the task. LINK

That changes nothing. Businesses that want to be in the City of BR should be allowed to be annexed.

The City of St George WILL be created as step one toward a new school district. The COSG will pass easily in 2015.

Your post reminds me of this scene from a Monty Python movie.

I thought that they couldn't annex any of those since the petition had been turned in or is it they no more properties can petition to be annexed now?

The only place I've read that is on this board, and that came from a link someone posted to The Hayride blog which doesn't have a stellar record of accuracy.

I still don't understand why your so opposed to this? If these ppl who live outside the city of Baton Rouge wish to create their own city, what does it matter to you? Are you in the proposed area?

I see your faith is an awesome faith. One gets the feeling that even if it was possible to demonstrate conclusively to St. George proponents that this would be a historic clusterfrick, they would still favor it. Maybe even more so. At some point it became a test of wills, and it became impossible to reassess and regroup without losing face. Some are too far down the rabbit hole to get back out. They just want to stick it to the other side SOOOOO freaking bad. they've lost perspective. Not all of course, but many.

The more I see of how they react to these setbacks the more I realize how-fire-aim-ready this whole thing has become.

I believe his original dislike of St. George was born of rosy budget projections, which is fair.

Does anyone have a rough estimate of what the revenue attached to all the annexed properties are?

Okay. I've explained why at least 3 times. If you really want to know you can search my posts. I don't feel like doing it again. Sorry.

At least $16 million.

The MoL local sales taxes = $9 million and the L'Auberge Casino fees are $7 million.

There would also be some city property taxes on the Mall, the private property and the casino but I have not seen any estimate for those. The hospitals are exempt from property taxes.

The linked article has some good info about sales taxes and mall property taxes.

It has the MOL at 9 million in one place and 7 million in another as far as sales taxes go; but I think that is for the entire MOL and not just the annexed stores.

The gambling revenues from the casinos are listed at 7 million in the SG budget .

The other areas annexed probably have a minimal affect on sales tax collections but some impact on property tax collections which aren't in the SG city budget but impact the SGFD and future school tax collections.

At what point do the annexations mean that the city is no longer using more than what is collected from within the city limits?

From a former Greenie - I live in the proposed area - have since 1990. I'm opposed to the COSG effort. Why am I opposed? Happy with the services provided by EBRP government and don't want my taxes to increase.

From the outside looking in this entire situation looks petty. It's like children fighting.
