I've never planted a food plot before and I'm wanting to plant some rye grass this year. Nobody around me plants so I think it might get some more deer coming my way. I borrowed a tiller from a guy at work and I was planning on tilling and just throwing the seeds out. However there's no rain in the forecast. Im planting in a pit behind the levee that dried up about a week and a half ago. My questions; will planting now with no rain coming be a waste or will the grass still grow? And is tilling necessary for planting rye grass?

Is there grass there or just dirt?

Rye grass grows very easily. You can probably just throw some seed out. I wouildnt worry about the rain either. Just over seed it

Yeah there's some patches of grass that grew up within about 2 days of the water drying up.

Dont worry about tilling. Just throw it out and it will grow, guaranteed.

You can get ryegrass to come up in the middle of a parking lot

King Ranch grows rye in the bed of his truck. Just empty miller lite cans as fertilizer. That stuff will grow anywhere.

You may lose some but just throw out a little extra.

That's a big relief because I was still trying to figure out how to bring that big arse tiller a mile down a rutted up road on my 4 wheeler.

The minute you need them to feed your family they die.

Been there done it.

Not having rain is not a problem until AFTER it germinates. That's when rain is critical.

You don't need to till if you overseed but it'll take more time than if you do till. I don't deer hunt but have planted rye that way more than once for show goats.

as the others say, it is not necessary to till ryegrass...just throw it out and it will come up...

fwiw, you are getting pretty late though, so quit fricking around and get some seed thrown out...the grass needs to be growing in these last few weeks of warm weather....

Once it starts coming up throw some 13-13-13 on it and it will get out of control. Let it get to about 4 inches so you don't burn it with the fertilizer

When planting figure on 4-7 days to germinate then you need rain.

I'm finally taking my chances tomorrow and planting rain looks to be about a week away but hoping that it will all work out...
