While I was sitting it my truck at Auto Zone. It's to the metal and also made a small dent. It was the edge of the door of a Honda Accord, which comes to like a point. I got out of my truck and he apologized but I asked him to pay to fix it. It's a 4 month old truck. We exchanged cell numbers and I wrote down his plate. Of course I call the number and it goes straight to a message saying the voice mail is not set up. I can see two cameras on the parking lot so I am sure it's on camera. Call the cops? Will I get shot? I have no dogs with me.

First line of defense against cops power play.

I would go get a dog and then definitely call the cops.

But for real... call the cops.

Find him. Kill him. But really, you should probably call the cops and give them the license plate and report it because they will/can find him, and he could be charged as a criminal to the full extent of the law.

I would chalk it up to bad luck and let it go. Fix it myself if I felt so inclined, but probably just drive it.

Cops will likely tell you it happened on private property and therefore is not their problem. If you can't get the guy to pay up, which you likely won't be able to, then you'll just have to file with your own insurance.

ETA: I could be wrong, but I've convinced myself my answer is correct.

Why don't you just try calling him a few more times first?

That's usually the case with parking lot incidents.

This. Get some touch up paint and fix it yourself. And stop being a bitch.

Call police, file incident report. Hopefully they'll pull the owners info from the plate/registration.

Call the owner, tell him you filed police report and ask for his insurance info.

Have his insurance pay for the repairs.

I'd also go talk to the auto zone folks about getting a copy of the footage.

ETA, an incident report is what they'll generate, won't do a full accident report for private parking lot.

This is they way it is in Missouri, they wont respond to traffic incidents on private property.

Why would you call the cops? Was a crime committed?

Well, I'm no big city lawyer, but I'd imagine (while it be small) destruction of property?
