N’awlins Pellies

Simmons: Anthony Davis, Anthony Davis, and Anthony Davis. Oh, and Anthony Davis. Did I forget anything?

Lowe: Monty Williams’s suits! Ryan Anderson is back! I wish I enjoyed watching their perimeter players half as much as their big guys. I wish all three of Davis, Anderson, and Omer Asik could play at the same time — and Williams will likely give that at least a token early shot. But something about watching Tyreke Evans and Eric Gordon …

Simmons: Those guys definitely fail the “Would It Be Fun To Play With Him?” test. But Davis, Asik and Jrue Holiday … that’s a pretty nice start. I wish we could bring Don Nelson out of his Hawaii hibernation to coach these guys. There’s a legitimately entertaining style lurking somewhere in here. Let’s just say that I don’t trust Monty Williams to unleash it.

Lowe: I kind of trust him. He runs some funky stuff on offense, even if too much of it results in midrange jumpers. That’s part of the reason it’s good to have Anderson back — he really opens up their playbook. They were a solid offensive team last season, and lights-out when they had all their guys. The defense is the bigger question, though it’s hard to be even below-average with Asik and Brow.

Simmons: Would you trade Nerlens Noel, Elfrid Payton and a 2015 late lottery pick for Holiday and one year of Asik? Because that’s what New Orleans did. Yikes. Then again, in all caps, THIS TEAM HAS ANTHONY DAVIS ON IT! So who cares?

Lowe: There’s a very strong chance those deals will end up on the bad side of the ledger in the aggregate, and they are part of the reason the Pelicans have no depth. The rising cap might help them, since they should have flexibility at some point to add another cog. Small-market teams are nervous about banking enough revenue to spend well over the cap when it gets into the $100 million range down the line, but the TV deal and a revamped revenue-sharing system should empower that sort of spending.

Is retaining Asik beyond this season really as bleak as that snippet made it sound? Also I don't understand why Eric Gordon won't become a trade asset in the near future as he approaches expiring status.

Get the frick out! Tyreke is very fun to watch, imo

Hindsight is 20/20. We were banking on being much better last year, etc, but:

2014 Asik >>...>> 2014 Noel
2014 Holiday >>>> 2014 Payton
2015 Pick-won't be lottery

so yeah, that trade looks OK to me.

I don't really like him but understand I'm in the minority amongst Pellies fans. He's kind of brusque, like a bull in a china shop. His one move is that aggressive drive/spin into the paint and it always seems so reckless and I don't think he finishes at a very great percentage considering how close he can get to the rim.

With that said, I do think he fits better than Simmons and Lowe do - he's a creator and we don't have many. Plus having Asik and Ryno and Holiday should help everybody look better.

I really just do not understand why national media thinks we are only going to have Asik for one more year. If we have a solid season, why the hell wouldn't he resign. He's a starter here and playing next to Davis, why the hell would you leave that?

We'd have had cap space to try and sign another piece as well but I get that there was nobody sensational out there.

I'd venture to say it is more likely that Nerlens suffers a career ending knee injury in the next two seasons than Asik leaving after one year. There's a reason that teams like Phoenix and Orlando passed on him.

And they passed on him for LEN who had serious injury concerns in his own regard

FIFH*

And yes. Yes I would.

*I think I understand the Bird rights concept as it applies to Asik but correct me if I'm wrong.

It's a fair judgement to make at this time, we don't have any commitment from him. But this argument will change dramatically when we make the playoffs this year.

Would you trade Nerlens Noel, Elfrid Payton, and 2 future 2nds for Holiday and Asik? Especially considering how Davis was ready to win earlier than expected, 2 2nds seems like a fair price for both time shifting and guaranteeing rather than hoping for a high level of play.

I knew when I saw the thread title the only thing Simmons was going to have to say was bashing the Holiday trade

It's almost like that's the only fricking thing he even knows about the franchise

Well actually it probably IS the only thing he knows about the franchise, so...

You are correct. Getting Asik's bird rights was a huge deal. Rather than trade out 2015 pick to dump Gordon and bid on Asik, we get Asik a year earlier and if all goes well we won't even have to outbid the market, just match the market.

I love how that twat waffle just automatically assumes that's who we would've taken with our picks if we would've kept them. it's much more likely that we would've taken a PG instead of nerlens therefore leaving us not taking elfrid the following season.

Ryno and the Reke on the floor together is $$$. Ryno keeps his big out of the lane allowing Reke to get to the rim pretty easily.

I understand that point. He is certainly a bull in a china shop. But the amount of open looks he creates on the wings is quite amazing and he does a fairly good job of hitting the open guys during his drive. Jrue and Gordon had open looks for days Monday night but were just off.

Reke should've had at least 10 assists if those guys knocked down half of their open J's.

It is a necessary havoc for our offense. Davis and Asik/Anderson can slip their guys for easy follow-up buckets or Jrue/Gordon/Fredette/Salmons/Anderson can spot up for a wide open 3.

frick bill simmons. frick that cocksucker. i hate that dude. get the frick over it. this is complete hindsight bullshite.

yes, i'm mad.

eta: also, the chances that the pels would have drafted nerlins anyway were slim to none without the trade in place

It's hindsight viewed through the worst possible scenario lens. Too bad nobody is going to call him out when the team makes the playoffs (turning that Asik 1st into 2 2nds) with Tyreke as the 2nd best player (he hated hard on the Tyreke move too).
