Didnt smell too bad when i went in july.
Whoever said you can stuff yourself and lose weight, you are correct. We ate out every meal but breakfast for several days, wine with every meal, and we didnt gain a pound from all te walking. Wish it was that way here.

Florence is worth it (recommend Attica Trattoria and a bistecca alla fiorentina while there), Siena (several agriturismos in area that you can base from), Montalcino, Montepulciano, and Orvieto (Umbria) are all worth visiting. There are bus tours for local wineries (DOCG) from Siena that you might enjoy. Milan has a bad rep (this from the Italians) for crime, etc. so don't stay long there if you don't have to. Avoid Naples. Have fun.

We have heard that Milan isn't that great as a place to visit,
You heard right. On the other hand, Florence is gorgeous.

I'm more confused by this thread than ever.

Took the wife and kids to Milan for Mardi Gras using the deal posted here. Milan isn't that great. We only stayed in town to catch Juve v. AC Milan at the San Siro. We then took a train to Florence, then Rome, then Venice and back to Milan. All in 6 1/2 days. You have to move fast but you can get the highlights in.

Skip Venice. It's pretty overrated if you ask me, and is out of the way. If I were you, I would take the train and stay in Florence and take day trips to Siena, Pisa, Chianti, and southern Tuscany. That's the best way to spend a week.

So...what did you think of everything.

A week? Not enough time for Italy...
That said, I would fly into Florence and spend a couple of days there, then rent a car and drive to Montepulciano and spend 2-3 days there, then drive down to Rome for the remainder and flight out.

The game at the San Siro was awesome and was the highlight of the trip. Florence was great and in my opinion a must. I'm very glad we went to Rome for the children's sake. They got to see and walk around places they will hear about for the rest of their lives. The historic part of the city is very easy to navigate and the major sites are all within bus/walking distance.
If I had to skip one of the cities (behind Milan but you can't beat $300 rt tickets)it would be Venice. It was one of my children's favorite places but I don't think there is enough to do there to justify the time it takes to get there and back.
The trains make everything very accessible but make sure you book far enough out. The prices go up a good bit the closer the date gets.

Everyone should go to Venice. There is no where else in the world like it. A very romantic city if you do it right (e.g. $$$) Only downside is that it can be very crowded. Some great museums there but nothing to compare with Rome and Florence. I can't give you advice since I'm a slow traveler-I'd spend a week in one city so that you can see as much as possible.
Where you go really depends on what you want to see. I mean does the wife want to shop? Do you want to go to museums? Are you interested in ancient history? Countryside?
