LSU point guard Josh Gray seems to have all the tools and I don't want to put undue pressure on him but his dribbling ability, court presence, cutting ability remind me of Chris Jackson. Here's a practice video

And here's him in some game action..

He's had a rough upbringing...hopefully he can stay out of trouble at LSU.

Hickey was as true a PG as they come, Gray is more of a scoring guard.

The main things Hickey lacked (on the court) was the ability to get into the lane and pass out of that and being 5'10 really hurt.

He led Texas Tech in assists as a soph. FWIW

Yep.

And 5'10" may have been a bit generous

He was only there as a freshman, and I didn't say he cant distribute, he's just a score first type of mentality.

his release point will always bother me, but he handles the ball extremely well with his eyes up. I don't think he'll take too long to make most people forget about Hickey(assuming he brings the same kind of effort)

but in a pure basketball sense, this should be a huge upgrade IMO

I agree and I'm not saying he will be CJ but his ball handling reminds me of him and that's a huge upside. As far as him not being a "True" Point guard...well whats wrong with a point guard that can score? At LSU we have come to believe a point guard can only pass and dribble up the court, because that's what ours have done in the last 20 years.

Josh Gray is just about everything Coach Jones wants in a point guard. I'm glad he's getting his guys in the program who'll run exactly what he wants to.

Our point guards have been pretty poor over the last 15-20 years, with one or two exceptions.

Looking at his shot, it looks like a very low release point and not very quick. I love his handle, but would be happier seeing him work more on passing and defense than scoring. Penetrate and dish. Take the open 3 if available, but only if wide open.

This. Maybe the best basketball player I've ever seen in person. It's not fair to compare Gray to Jackson

I hear ya. You brought up CJ's name and it really brought up good memories. I was a sudent at LSU during those years. Students would camp outside the athletic department for days to get tickets to watch CJ score 30 a game.

Good times.

I'm sorry but in today's game, what you stated he lacked is an absolute requirement out of a point guard

Yes sir good memories for me as well. I was one of those students camping out for those games and I was on the front row for many of them. CJ was the best I've ever seen but they had some pretty good ones after him when I was in college (Ronnie Henderson comes to mind)

CJ was a rare talent. Good luck to J Gray and looking forward to seeing him play.

His release isn't quick? It looks exceptionally quick. Quick enough that he should be able to vet it off despite the fact that it is low.

I'm worried that he it may be inconsistent because he releases it at an odd angle, even though he seems to square his shoulders up well.

I honestly think Gray scored out of necessity in JUCO, but will be a pass first guy at LSU. Possibly a 10 pts a game type guy, but I really expect him to be able to get into the lane and find teammates.

I think he could average over 6 assists per game for LSU which we haven't seen in a very long time.

I'm excited about him being paired with Hornsby on the perimeter.
