Patriots acquired OLB Akeem Ayers from the Titans in exchange for a sixth-round pick.
Per CBS' Jason La Canfora, the Pats are also getting a sixth-rounder in return. Jim Wyatt reports the deal is contingent on Ayers passing his physical. The Titans are giving up on a player who was a key cog on defense in 2011-13, but has been active just twice this season. Ayers has played only 10 snaps on defense in 2014, and apparently isn't a fit for DC Ray Horton's system. Ayers underwent surgery on both knees last offseason, but has been healthy enough to play. In the final year of his rookie contact, Ayers is an extra body for a Pats D that's taken big hits to its linebacker corps.

Redskins placed OLB Brian Orakpo on injured reserve with a torn right pectoral, ending his season.
OLB Everette Brown has been signed in a corresponding roster move. The torn pec is the third of Orakpo's career, though the first two were to his left side. Either way, it's an ominous way for the 28-year-old pass rusher to head into free agency. Orakpo will be an unrestricted free agent after playing under the franchise tag this season. He'll have missed 24 of his past 48 games once the season is through. It's quite possible 'Rak has played his final down for the Redskins.

NFL suspended Bucs DL Da'Quan Bowers two games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances.
A suspension was about the only thing missing from the 2011 mega bust's list of NFL lowlights. Bowers has played 159 snaps this season, but failed to generate any pass-rushing heat, notching only one sack. He played just 22-of-68 snaps in the Bucs' most-recent game. He'll return in Week 10.
more of a name than a good player

Cowboys waived DE Michael Sam from the practice squad.
Sam had been with the Cowboys' taxi squad since before Week 1, but never earned a promotion to the 53-man roster. The NFL's first-openly gay player will now search for more practice-squad work. Sam notched three sacks in four preseason games, but his size (6-foot-2, 261 pounds) and one dimensional pass-rushing repertoire are holding him back.
uh oh

Every report I have seen is that it's New England's 6th rounder for the Titans' 7th rounder - a move-up of probably 10-12 spots for Tennessee, depending of course on how this season plays out.
