Got a private session in firearms instruction with a leading instructor for 2 1/2 hours today. That was a damn workout. We worked with my Taurus .38 and then Glock 23. Said if I could shoot with the .38, the semis would be easier. That was a damn workout. WOrkout on my back anyway. Whatever I thought I knew about guns went out the window in 2 seconds. Was alot of fun.

I highly recommend hiring an instructor for a couple of private sessions. Well worth it.

Was more surprised by how much of a workout it was.

Started with the basics. Shot at 5-7 yards. Had some props such as sight tools/diagrams, a little box that clips to his belt that registers each shot by sound and tells how much time you took between shots, training Glock was very helpful for dry fire exercises.

We started with basics. Working on grip, sighting, breathing, stance. Then moved up to different types of shooting as in shoot five in rapid succession. Pull trigger back to where it almost fires, then shoot- more accurate but takes a little longer. Then went from shooting two handed to one handed. Then moved to some work with the Glock. It was pretty good. Going back next week. Need to practice in between.

didn't ask. We are doing a trade. Its worth it though. Used a lot more of my back than I thought I would. Its fun seeing the little things cause in improvement on the target.

That's a shot timer. You can get one on Midway if you want to practice with a beep and have your shots timed. It also is good if you randomize the beep (mine is set to beep between 4-10 seconds) and practice drawing from your holster. You don't know when the beep will go off and it keeps you on your game.

You should dry fire every handgun you own and practice it. Keep your sights aligned as the trigger breaks. This will show you if you are pulling the trigger with a flinch.

Pull trigger back to where it almost fires, then shoot- more accurate but takes a little longer.

This is called "staging" the trigger. You should always come back to that point each time and your finger should never lose contact with the trigger face. Stage-break-follow through-reset. Stage-break-follow through-reset. Practice that with dry firing too and pull the slide back between each shot with your finger on the trigger to simulate follow through and reset.

A private lesson certainly will open your eyes if you're a novice. I'm sure you also learned that your Glock was much easier to shoot than that Taurus.

Yup. But the Taurus was better than he thought it was. Trigger pull is very good on it. He didn't think it was factory.

Turned out my Taurus I bought back in 2002. Made in Brazil. It was made on the old S&W machines down there and not made like the guns are now. But he said he preferred to teach me first on the taurus as everything else would be easier. Shot better with the Glock but you expected that, I'm sure.

The timer was good. It was nice seeing improvement in terms of how fast you were shooting while keeping the accuracy. Oddly enough, I shot better one-handed with my left hand than right hand.

Not that odd. Actually pretty common -- fewer bad habits to overcome.

I did two 10hr pistol days, and my shoulders were pretty sore after the first one. You'd also be surprised that just the repetitive noise of a gun firing will wear people out. I learned that one of those days

That's why women are easier to teach to be good shots than men who've been shooting their whole lives. You don't have to break bad habits. They learn it right from the beginning and suddenly they're lighting up the guys. My dad taught thousands of people to shoot and that was one thing he always said. I'd go to his classes and damn near every time when they'd get to the range, some woman that had never shot before was smoking pretty much everybody or at least hanging with them.

Used to crack me up when there's be cops in the class getting their arse handed to them by a chick because they thought they knew better than the instructor. He had a room pretty much completely filled with trophies but apparently that's not impressive enough to bother listening when you think you know what you're doing because you can shoot as well as your average cop. I used to embarrass the hell out of those guys when I was less than ten years old. The old man would even warn them beforehand.

Ego is not good for shot placement.

Didn't even use the laser.

Yup.

I hadn't shot a handgun in a very long time so I was pretty much starting from scratch. Didn't have any habits to break.

The qualifying test for cops in this state is a joke. Most rounds are from 3,5, and 7 yards.

Well to be fair, that's the range they're likely to be in a gunfight in.

True. I think they have to nail 7 out of 20 from 15 and 20 yards if the make all the short range shots. 75 out of 100 is qualifying.

I'm guessing statistics show that most police involved shootings occur within these distances.

The course isn't a joke, the joke is that only annual qualifications are needed and that is the only time most officers ever handle their guns more than just putting it in a safe
