PFF Stats of Game #6

OFFENSE
-Kenny Stills and Colston had a strong day. Good to see that.
-I find it surprising that our run blocking was average overall. Based on listening to the game, it seemed like there weren't many holes. But none of the backs earned good scores this week. They need to play better.
-Speaking of, why is everyone giving Robinson a pass for his fumble?
-Brees is a frustrating QB. Overall, he's very good; but then he makes awful mistakes that seem to overshadow his good work. His score is still in the positive.
-Pass blocking is -3.7. This just isn't going to cut it.
-Below, I added PFF's breakdown of Brees' performance based on pressure.
-I think that paints a pretty clear picture. When he's not pressured, Brees threw with an accuracy of 77.8% (on 27 attempts, mind you) for a passer rating of 131.9.
-When Brees was pressured, that completion percentage drops all the way down to 38.9%. That's really bad. Say what you want about veteran QB's and needing to make better decisions, this pressure is killing our offense.
-Looking at our offensive lineman, the pass blocking scores ranged from +.1 to -1.4. No QB can be effective under these conditions.
-Neither Center looks up to the task.
DEFENSE
-Probably the best score I've seen out of Lofton.
-Lewis, when healthy, is starting to look like last year's shutdown corner.
-I don't know what's wrong with Jordan. It just doesn't make sense.
-White, Dixon, Ball, and Vaccaro had bad coverage scores. This isn't going to work going forward.
-Hicks' score continues to suck. Something very bad happened to this DL. They're just not playing anywhere near as well as last season.
-The only thing we did right was run defense. Jordan actually shined there.

Brees under pressure in 40% of dropbacks. How does that compare to other teams?

on side note, I was happy to see Brod Bunkley pissed off about not going back in there and getting to finish the game. Kind of random but I like that he wanted back in.
the penalties by Haralson and Jordan yesterday where unacceptable.

IDK man I thought jordan's roughing the passer was a pretty weak call
I see SJB's score was positive (limited number of plays obviously) but did anyone hear in any post game comments if that last TD was supposed to be man coverage and SJB just completely blew it or if it was actually zone coverage Bush stepped up too early on the wrong WR?

Anyone else find it surprising that #36 Ball was not even on our roster a couple weeks ago and then he came in yesterday basically starting ast the slot CB?.....I know P-Rob wasn't there but I thought that was kind of odd how that played out....I thought he looked pretty good live but his numbers here aren't very good

Ball was playing CB?
That's pretty odd.

That's what I thought too, but early on in the game, like Detroit's first drive or two Ball was in the game lined up like press man tight on the slot WR with Vaccaro & Bush in the back, and Lewis & White on the outside

We have a lot of DB injuries.

That we do...But I was still confused why Ryan didn't put Dixon in to cover the slot if they obviously trust him enough to put him on the outside.....Also I would've thought that may have been a good time for SJB to get in there but who knows

Thank you for exposing the O-Line who's been getting a massive pass on this board's "omg drew sux he's done" mantra this season. That pick was bad but good lord the amount of people on Brees' arse is dumb.

Evans plays well and the deep ball returned
Posted on 10/20/14 at 12:48 pm to htran90
I've mentioned before that that we never get both guards playing well at once.

I'm not even mad about the last touchdown... we still had two minutes and Brees and only needed a FG.
1 for 12 passes later and the season looks over.

3 heartbreakers this year, but this one stung the least.
It just feels like this year is the simple year of 99% of the game goes right, that 1% that goes wrong just happens to be at the last moment.
As much as we could be 5-1, we could also be 1-5 because we keep shooting ourselves in the foot.
You always hear "It starts in the trenches" and we're losing in the trenches. 3 of the best interior DLineman in the past 3 games and all 3 games have been drew having no time in the pocket.

I agree it wasn't a cheap shot or anything but late in the game you have to be smarter than that.
15 years ago that doesn't get called but now with the incredibly soft rules they have, it does.
and if that were Suh or Fairley driving Brees into the turf, we'd be looking for a flag too.
and we'd get it.
the Saints had done a good job with not having as many penalties until yesterday. I think that really cost us the game to be honest.
edit: not Jordan's roughing the passer penalty but just penalties in general.

It's best to take PFF with a grain of salt. These guys have their own rating system, and coaches in the past have said that they don't really know what they are doing. Still it's a good tool to use and look at.
I point this out, because I saw Evans get smoked twice yesterday. I am unsure how he is in the green with this one. Mainly it's due to his run blocking, but I don't buy the overall grade. Also Brees had a 0 rating for the 4th quarter (I read this somewhere today). How can a 0 rating in 1 quarter of play yield a green result?
Again, PFF is fun to look at, but let's not get caught in the trap of thinking it to be the truth

They are employed by 14 NFL teams though

I kind of thought it went without saying.
Regardless, the scores here are just meant to be an adjunct to the eyeball test.
They add to an ongoing discussion of player performance... Which honestly has been lacking on this board lately.
