And remember the proposed city of SG is larger in area than the area of the city of Baton Rouge. At least it was before all of the annexations happened. It's probably about the same now.

After looking at the map boundaries, I think you may be mistaken. Appears to be about 1/2 the size of Baton Rouge.

In Central, it is through the roof.
And the voters there have rejected a property tax to pay for the "legacy costs" owed to EBR/Baton Rouge. That will end up in court one day.

Plus the mayor & city council of Central have debated calling for another property tax increase vote to build a city hall complex.

You're correct about the Green Light Plan being a parish wide tax that would still apply to new road construction planned for all over the parish.

All over the parish? Baton Rouge is not building anything in SE BR. In fact, they are stealing money from little children to build the Kip Mahal downtown. At least that is what I have been told...

I didn't go by any map. I used the square miles data for each city I found on the internet. I'm on my iPad now but I saved the websites where I found that information on my PC.

Baton Rouge is 79.11 square miles. St George prior to the annexations was 85.0 square miles in area.

I'm a 25 yr old voter who purchased a house in the proposed St. George city limits back in January. My wife and I spent about six months looking at the pros and cons of the new city, and the incorporation of Central and Zachary.

When it was all said and done, we decided to sign the petition and donate to the effort.

I believe that a small city can be governed more effectively than a large city. We moved down here from a suburb of Detroit, Michigan. I have seen firsthand how a city with a large area can be easily mismanaged, leading to flight, infrastructure decay, and declining property value. EBR is three times the size of the city of Detroit.

I hope that if the measure passes, it will benefit both the city of Baton Rouge and the city of St. George.

I know you're being facetious but the facts are the SG area has received more new infrastructure dollars than any other area of the parish. It was over $320 million as of early this summer according to the Green Light website.

Can I ask a question? What is your purpose for all of your posts in the SG threads? Seems like you are trying to convince people not to back the idea, whereas others are simply voicing their opinions as to why or why they don't like it. I personally back it, but what others choose to do is up to them. I'm not going to try and force my opinion on anyone.

Russian provides more facts in one St. George thread than Lionel Rainey has provided in two years. It's a public service.

Beau Tie St. George organizers submit petition with signatures I think it passes 60-40. People will see it as a protest vote to the way BR has been run. Also it will be a vote against the EBR school board and school system as well. The blue bloods will spend a lot of money to prevent it from happening.

If by some chance it would pass a sign will go up in my yard that says for sale. And all of the people I know in the area have the same feeling as do many other people we have discussed. You will see an exodus and we are not the ones you want to leave.

Do you think my bringing facts and figures into the debate is forcing my opinion on others?

I don't believe the SG organizers are being truthful with their citizens when they tell them they don't anticipate additional taxes will be needed for a new city or for a new school district.

A better question you should be asking is why are they telling people that when any feasibility analysis shows they are lying? The answer is if they told the truth about the likely need for new taxes the vote against incorporation would be overwhelming.

I think originally there would have been none, but after the recent defections there will probably be some.

That said, if the school systems improve then the extra taxes will be worth it to most voters.

Fair enough. I wouldn't say you're necessarily forcing your opinion; I just think your objective is to persuade others to side with you. Honestly I'm just against the whole bussing thing. I don't understand the need for it. If EBR would cut out the transfer buses and send all kids to their own neighborhood schools, I'd be all for it.

Read up a little on this, quit listening to your neighbors

I'm probably not pulling my kid out of private school. Would not be happy with higher taxes. Signed petition but I need more of a measurable plan before the vote.

You should send your kids to EBR schools. It is a shining example of what the BR government is capable of.

Too bad the rest of the city services couldn't live up to that level.

You're very astute.

There is no forced bussing for deseg purposes in EBR. That ended a few years ago when the district was declared desegregated by the federal courts. Students now go to neighborhood schools with the exception of magnet or gifted/talented students who attend schools outside of their neighborhood. There has also been a small amount of displaced high school students due to the demolition and rebuilding of Lee High School. That rebuilding is almost complete.

There are transfer points for a smalll minority of students because there is no school applicable for them close to where they live. That is almost exclusively high school with a few middle school students involved.

FYI, if SG gets its own school district some students in SG will have to be bussed further than they are now.

Like the other poster suggested to you, you might want to research some facts and not listen to the incorrect opinions of uninformed persons.

You need to be a little more vague.
