Anyone following this? A submerged vessel was spotted near Stockholm. The Swedes are blaming Russia, Russia is blaming the Dutch. And there are also reports of a mystery man walking out of the sea.

quote:

The Swedish military said Sunday it had made three credible sightings of foreign undersea activity in its waters during the past few days amid reports of a suspected Russian intrusion in the area.

The armed forces published a photograph taken on Sunday by a passerby showing a partially submerged object in the water from a distance, but it was unclear what kind of vessel was in question.

quote:

Rear Adm. Anders Grenstad told reporters that he wouldn't speculate on the photograph or sightings except to say the region is "of interest to a foreign power."

The military said the intelligence operation, involving a few hundred people, began Friday. It was sparked by information "from a credible source."

quote:

Anders Nordin from the Swedish Maritime Administration said a Russian-owned oil tanker, Concord, which had reportedly been circling near Swedish waters for days, started sailing in a northeasterly direction toward Russia on Sunday morning. But it suddenly turned around and headed back in the direction of Sweden, according to Marine Traffic, a website which monitors vessels in the Baltic Sea.

Media reports said the movements of the Liberian-flagged tanker might be connected to the submarine search.

Then there's the man in black...

quote:

Roland Oliphant has more on the theory that the submarine apparently stranded off the Swedish coast was undertaking a top-secret, James Bond-esque spy extraction mission. Far-fetched? Perhaps. But who knows...

"As everyone one knows, the best role of a submarine in any Cold War drama is to deliver or extract spies from hostile shores in the dead of night.
Following that logic, the vessel in question almost certainly ran into trouble while delivering a Russian agent to a remote Baltic island to do something swashbuckling and nefarious.
Exactly what such a spy might be up to is anyone’s guess.
After all, Russia and Sweden are not at war, and Aeroflot flies Moscow to Stockholm twice daily (from a very reasonable £73, according to the airline’s website).
So unless Moscow’s spy agencies have lost the ability to travel incognito, there would have to be a good reason to take such a risky and laborious travel option.
Probably the kind of reason that would make a decent airport paperback."

Remember the reports last night of an enigmatic "man in black" wading off the Swedish island of Korso, raising the prospect that the submarine could have been sent to drop off or pick up an elite Russian spy?
Well, Swedish website DE claims to have found a picture of him, snapped by a local last night:

And Russia blaming the Netherlands:

quote:

The plot has thickened this morning, with Russia claiming that the mysterious stricken vessel is in fact Dutch.

AFP cites an equally mysterious "source in the Russian defence ministry":
"To remove tensions in the waters of the Baltic Sea and to save money of the Swedish taxpayers we would recommend (Sweden) to turn to the naval command of the Netherlands for an explanation," a source at the defence ministry in Moscow told Russian news agencies.
The source said that the Dutch diesel-electric submarine Bruinvis was carrying out tasks near Stockholm last week.

And the Dutch said "nope":

quote:

The Netherlands has denied the Russian claim that the mystery sub could be one of theirs.
"To remove tensions in the waters of the Baltic Sea and to save money of the Swedish taxpayers we would recommend (Sweden) to turn to the naval command of the Netherlands for an explanation," the unnamed official was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying.
But the Dutch defence ministry said its submarine was no longer in the area when the mystery vessel was reportedly sighted.
"We participated in an exercise with Sweden with several ships, but it ended last week Thursday," Dutch defence ministry spokeswoman Marnoes Visser told AFP.
"The Bruinvis then departed for Estonia, where it has been at anchor in the Tallinn harbour over the weekend."
"The Dutch submarine is not involved and we are further not involved in any search action or such," she said.

Additionally, the Swedesh have intercepted encrypted communication coming from the sub. They have determined that the communications are to/from Russia.

What kind of Tom Clancy-esque shennanigans are the Russians up to?

If Putin decides to do anything to a place like Sweden, the world will come down on him, hard.

they didnt decode them, they were just able to identify the locations of the receivers/transmitters.

But yeah. not exactly stealthy if you can be detected at all.

Yeah they were saying that they thought the sub could be having some sort of emergency b/c of transmissions they picked up.

quote:

Sources told Svenska Dagbladet newspaper that Sweden had begun a search after a radio transmission in Russian was detected on an emergency frequency on Thursday evening.

Encrypted radio traffic from a point in the Stockholm archipelago and Kaliningrad was later also picked up.

Another twist:

quote:

Just when the whole affair couldn't get any more 007, a rumour is now being circulated that the Russians were testing out a prototype mini-submarine known as the Triton NN.

Not much is known about it, but according to the website of the NIzhny Novogorod Lazurit design bureau, which claims to have designed it, a prototype underwent government testing in 2008. It is meant to combine the qualities of a speed boat and a submersile and may have been issued to navy special forces in Kaliningrad.

I found this little snippet interesting as well...

quote:

Sweden's neighbours seem to be taking the issue rather more seriously.
Estonia has stepped up surveillance of its territorial waters, with the border guard looking out for "potential anomalies," spokesman Priit Parkna said.
In Lithuania, the events in Sweden have sparked concerns over the safety of a floating natural gas import terminal currently being transported on the Baltic Sea to the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda. The terminal is seen as key to Lithuania's plans to reduce its reliance on Russian energy.

They do have ships there. There is an active search going on right now. But it's a "military exercise".

quote:

Sweden has warned the public for the first time to keep a distance of at least six miles from the operation, raising further speculation about what dangers could lurk beneath the surface of the Baltic Sea - though it continues to deny it is involved in a "submarine hunt".

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Loefven said on Monday that more military exercises were being carried out in the Baltic Sea.

"There's an increase in military exercises from both the Russian and the Nato side," Prime Minister Stefan Loefven said, speaking at a press conference in Helsinki.

"There's no reason for exaggerated concern here but obviously we are aware of what's happening in the Baltic Sea because it's our neighbourhood."

Sweden's navy has widened the search area southwards to the open sea, about 44 miles southeast of Stockholm.

If you mean by "the world", the United States, and "come down hard", you mean, file a formal protest at the U.N.? You're correct.

If you mean "anybody else" or "anything else" - you couldn't be more wrong.

Hmm, so Triton NN looks like a speedboat with a cover over the top. Last time Russia had a major sub accident was the one they refused help on until after rescue was possible. Supposedly because they were testing a cavitation torpedo, but I don't think that was ever confirmed or not. Wonder if this was another test gone wrong or there is something more nefarious going on.

Interesting to think they might have dropped an agent with gear for some reason.
