thing in sports? I feel like this could be off by as much as 20 yards sometimes.

They have a ref behind the punter who points at the angle the ball went and the ref on the sideline goes up the sideline until he matches the point that the other ref is pointing at.

No way in hell that is accurate though, right?

I'm sure it's pretty accurate. It's not going to be perfect, but it's not off by a whole lot either.

Ref stands where the punter was and points to the flight path of the ball while the other ref runs up the sideline until he intersects with the fight path. Simple and pretty accurate.

Yeah I know the process, but if the ref pointing out the flight path is a few degrees off that could add up to a pretty good chunk miscalculated yardage down the field

I think the spotting of the ball between downs is pretty inaccurate too

I've thought about this before. Almost everything in football is down to at least a couple feet margin of error. When punts fly wildly out of bounds it looks like they just eye ball it and say what the hell this spot looks good.

nevermind I was thinking punt returner, behind the punter makes more sense

It's not that hard to see if you are standing on the sideline. Might not be exact but I doubt it's rarely off more than 2-3 yards.

It is enough to make it questionable... And in a game that declares itself a "game of inches", it's an aspect that should be looked at

The only thing more inaccurate is when high school coaches get blackout drunk and make up weights for their football players for the local media guide.

Not hardly.....
The white hat watches the ball as it goes out of bounds. Since it's usually a shank the angle out of bounds isn't that hard to note. The BJ walks up the sideline until the WH stops him at that point.

Within a couple of yards is plenty accurate.

Incredibly accurate, actually.

If you stand on field and follow the play walking down sidelines -- as side judges do -- it's actually pretty easy.

When the ref looks back for his bag of money in Tuscaloosa it can be way off too.
Wait... that was real right?

An outlier

Coaches and players are right there, ya know?

Don't you think there would be a lot of bickering coming their way if the spots were so inaccurate?

I love when a punt goes out of bounds...then the referee where the ball went out runs up the sidelines and spots it and you never know where he is going to stop. It is kinda like watching the "Cliffhangers" game on The Price is Right.

I thought they had refs on both sidelines looking down the sideline when the ball is punted. When the ball crosses the "imaginary line" where the ball went out of bounds, ref #1 raises his arm. At this moment, ref #2 on the opposite side of the field sees the ref #1 put up his hand and draws another "imaginary line" straight down to the field and that is where the ball should be placed. When ref #1 is walking up the sideline to see where the spot of the ball should be, he is looking across the field at ref #2 who tells him when to stop. "I will take football rules for 500 Alex."
