My son is in college, and he was about to buy a car. He decided to check his credit score, and thought it would be free. He went to Experian for a supposedly "free" credit check.

They mislead him by telling him that the credit check would be free, and then got him to put "just a dollar" on his credit card for the detailed report. Once they had his credit card, they put him on autobill for some credit monitoring system. Charged him $40 every 3 months, I think.

I recall them trying to do this to me, but I had heard about these types of scams while listening to Clark Howard, so I didn't go through with it. How do these companies get away with this shite?

Because they put a disclaimer on the page that says something like "This is a free trial and you may cancel at any time. If you do not cancel at the end of the free trial period you will be billed at the normal monthly rate."

You should try reading shite sometime.

He voluntarily put his credit card in, authorized a charge for a report, and clicked "I agree" to a monthly billing plan.

Where was the company at fault? Entitlement no personal responsibility culture at his finest.

Like two seconds of research online would've told him this would happen AND would have led him to the only source for actually free credit report.

I thought this was common knowledge? Freecreditreport/freecreditscore, etc. All the Experian credit check sites are well known scams. If you google any of them the first page is full of info saying they're scams.

The only one that is really free is Credit Karma. You can get your report from the big three once a year.
But your FICO you have to pay to see or go to Credit Karma. The issue with CK is that some say it's usually 20-30 points off.

Free Credit Report is a huge scam. I did the same thing as your son years back. "secure account with CC, $1 deposit, you have 15 days to cancel or you automatically agree to a $18 month contract" It's a scam. bullshite that they can use that name.

annualcreditreport.com is the only free one that will give you your report once a year but you have to pay to get your score. I use credit karma as a third party site to get an idea of my score instead of paying for it.

It's not their fault that he didn't cancel before he was autocharged

Next time, tell him to go Annual credit report.

Every person is allowed one free credit report from each of the reporting agencies every year. The link above is the only provider authorized by federal law. Absolutely $0.00 required or any credit card information at all. The only thing you have to do is enter your information and then answer a handful of questions for that only the person requesting the report would know the answer to verify identity.

If he want's to check his credit score, use Credit Karma. It's also free.

Edit: TigerPox beat me to it. Nonetheless, I'll leave the links up.

FIFY

My son is a Junior at RPI majoring in Aerospace Engineering and is on the Dean's List. No small accomplishment when averaging 21 hours per semester.

Care to elaborate on your credentials?

I have signed up on more than one website offering a "free trial" and cancelled before they would begin charging my credit card.

Your credentials?

He is a college kid. He has no experience in these things. Live and learn. To his credit, he paid attention to his statements and caught them early.

You never made a mistake like this in college? This board is full of pompous assholes...
