On a tech tear the last 2 weeks..smartwatch, new router, NAS, IP camera...

..2 new hard drives & 2 extra chromecasts.
Ask me anything
The router is the gift that keeps on giving. I need to update the other router post but I'm loving this thing..its made my life so much better from chromecast now being rock solid (its upstairs, router is down) to offloading all my media to a secured NAS to learning that using Google's DNS servers instead of comcrap significantly improved the web browsing on all devices to learning about DNSomatic and setting up DDNS settings in the router that will never expire..
now i can't wait to try out the new camera (foscam HD IP camera) and all the custom 'DVR' type software to tweak it and hook it into the ASUS ecosystem.
Plex happily plays along with the new NAS media share and honestly i've been so busy tweaking things i haven't actually got to sit down & enjoy anything.
best of all, nothing i mentioned cost more than $100 and all the software and services i've mentioned are all FREE.
first world problems

NAS?
i just hooked a usb3 1TB $40 drive into my asus router for the moment to get my head wrapped around the concept to make sure its going to do what i want. no expensive enclosure or redundant disks yet.

Have you ever run namebench? LINK
quote:
It hunts down the fastest DNS servers available for your computer to use. namebench runs a fair and thorough benchmark using your web browser history, tcpdump output, or standardized datasets in order to provide an individualized recommendation. namebench is completely free and does not modify your system in any way. This project began as a 20% project at Google.
I ran it and it determined that OpenDNS is the best choice for me.

What's the basic concept behind using other DNS servers instead of Comcast to improve web browsing?

A slow DNS will cause sites to load slower (and email to take longer to be delivered) because of the slower lookups. If you are unfamiliar with DNS, it is basically a lookup table that stores domain names linked with IP addresses and vice versa. Slightly longer explanation
ETA: For example if a lookup using the Google DNS takes 500ms while the Comcast DNS lookup takes 1.5 seconds, the site will appear to load 1 second slower. This is not considering the other stuff on the page that might be hosted elsewhere (which would increase the load times by a noticeable amount especially if there is a lot of content)

Thanks for the explanation
I will be taking a look at this when I get home and make the change.

not yet. i got the deal right through foscam and apparently they're up somewhere in canada so the truck is slowly making its way east to TN.
bonus: i downloaded a webcam monitoring app for my smartwatch so i'm going to try that out as well.
