The Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics will play a 44-minute game — four minutes shorter than a regulation NBA game — Sunday at the Barclays Center.

Playing four 11-minute quarters is a one-time preseason experiment and only exploratory. However, at the recent NBA coaches' meeting in Chicago, the length of games was a topic, and it was suggested the NBA take a look at shortening games.

"We have looked at everything that we do and are taking a fresh look at all the different things we do," NBA president of basketball operations Rod Thorn said. "One of the things that keeps coming up is our schedule and the length of our games. … Our coaches talked about it, and a lot of them seemed to be in favor of at least taking a look at it. We talked with our competition committee, and they were in favor of taking a look at it."

quote:

Each quarter will have two mandatory timeouts at the first dead ball under 6:59 and the first dead ball under 2:59, and the game will have two fewer mandatory timeouts than a normal game. In a 48-minute game, there are three mandatory timeouts in the second and fourth quarters, and the first mandatory timeout comes at the first dead ball under 5:59.

The league will pay close attention to the length of that game. The total time of an average NBA game is about two hours, 15 minutes.

Whether the NBA seriously looks at 44-minute game for permanent use, it strengthens the notion that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is open to ideas that challenge the status quo.

I don't see how you shorten anything in any professional sport. Everything is stats driven these days. Shorter games means less stats, less records, etc.

If they're trying to shorten NBA games, cut team timeouts in half. There is no reason for each team to have 6 timeouts in one half + TV timeouts.

Shortening the periods of each quarter wont decrease the amount of minutes a starter plays if I have to guess. Might even increase it.

If a starter averages 36 minutes a game when its 48 minutes long he will probably still play 36 minutes a game if the game is 44 minutes long. Also decreases the advantage of having a deep bench with the less amount of game time.

Or Maybe I'm crazy. Who knows.

instead of a tip off, the 2 teams should select 1 player to play a game of PIG.

The article basically said the exact same thing.

I used Lebron as an example, and then edited it to just be an average starter.

Read your reply.

Went and actually read article and it was almost like I had copied what they had said and used the same example

Yeah I would imagine having a bench wouldn't be nearly as important. Your starters would play a much higher percentage of the game.

One thing they could do instead is just get rid of the TV Timeouts.

People can say this as much as they want, but it isn't going to happen

I applaud Adam Silver for 'thinking outside the box.'

But I don't see many positives in doing this. NBA games really aren't that long.

This shite is really getting ridiculous, as someone said earlier eliminate some of the team timeouts, nothing worse than the final 2 minutes of a game lasting 30.

this change would greatly favor superstar driven teams with little to no bench depth.

They're just testing it out in ONE preseason game. Nothing wrong with that at all.

I wonder if these "outside the box" ideas were discussed in the recent media contracts? If they shorten games or decrease the number of games from 82,ESPN and Turner should be a little upset.

The coaches would never ever agree to decreasing the number of timeouts. It limits their perceived control over the flow of the game.

I can't imagine the networks being upset if games were shortened a little bit. They would probably love for games to be right at 2 hours. Now reducing the number of games, that might be an issue. But that sure as hell won't happen because it would hurt teams financially.

Yeah I don't get people being upset about this. The two teams volunteered to do it.

The only thing that needs to be addressed game length wise imo is the speed of reviews.

If you watch the local broadcast games of teams they actually seem to go by faster than college games because the commercials are a lot less frequent. The national TV broadcast are the ones that go on too long.
