quote:

A boxer reared in Baton Rouge who once fought against Floyd Mayweather Jr. was shot Monday night on Louisiana Avenue just north of Government Street, a few blocks away from a gym where he sometimes sparred.

Emanuel Burton, whose fighting name was Emanuel Augustus, was the man who was shot, said Chris Singleton, a Baton Rouge boxer who occasionally trains with Augustus.

“I just know he got shot in the back of the head,” Singleton said. “And he’s on life support right now.”

Singleton said he went to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center early Tuesday, where 20 to 30 people were gathered in support of Augustus.

The Baton Rouge Police Department is investigating the shooting, although the department declined to identify Augustus by name. The department typically does not identify shooting victims unless a victim dies.

The shooting occurred Monday night in the 1700 block of Louisiana Avenue on a portion of the road between North 17th and Brice Streets. The location is only a few blocks away from BREC’s North 14th Street Park, where Singleton sparred with Augustus whenever the well-known boxer was in town.

quote:

Augustus, 39, drew widespread attention in the early 2000s because of boxing matches against Floyd Mayweather Jr., one of the world’s most successful boxers, and Micky Ward, the boxer whose life provided the premise for the movie “The Fighter.”

Police ask anyone with information about this shooting to contact them at (225) 389-4869 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.

The only boxer I remember from BR is the black rhino Clifford Etienne. Didn't he go to jail for something?

Wow I just met him in the gym a few days ago. He was showing me how to slip and throw a left hook.

I hate that this happened. To those responding who didn't recognize his name, I assure you that the boxing world knows him. He was on ESPN numerous times and always fought hard.

Dude used to bus tables for me in the mid 90s. 100% crazy and mean but he worked his butt off. I think his fight with Ward was ESPN or Ring Magazine fight of the year.

Side note. Has a brother that was/is in jail named Obadiah who looks like the spawn of satan. He worked for us too but it didn't last long. After he was fired we got robbed. Hmmmmmmm?

Some people might recognize him after watching this video of him clowning around in the ring during fights.
