Sen. Rand Paul met with civil rights leaders Friday in Ferguson, Missouri, the city torn apart by racial unrest following the August shooting of an unarmed black teenager by a white police officer. During his visit, the Republican Senator, who is seen as a likely presidential candidate, stated his concerns about long prison sentences for nonviolent crimes, the loss of voting rights for felons and military programs to give unused equipment to local police departments.

“I wanted to find out what we could do to make the situation better,” Paul said of his visit Friday.

“Given the racial disparities in our criminal justice system, it is impossible for African-Americans not to feel like their government is particularly targeting them,” Paul wrote in an opinion piece for TIME this summer.

Yea, that's it. It's the governments fault.

No. He's saying those feelings are understandable - perhaps unavoidable and he wants to talk about it.

It's a great first step.

Sometimes you post great posts. Other times you're a terrible troll.

You're an enigma wrapped in a curiosity. Sort of like a jalapeno popper of fake republican value memes.

While this may be true, it has nothing to do with Ferguson. Ferguson is the result of an idiot attacking a cop with a gun.

Newsflash: If you attack someone with a gun, chances are likely you'll be shot.

In some respects, yes, it is.

who the hell elses fault could it be that blacks are pursued, arrested, prosecuted and incarcerated at a higher rate and for longer times than whites that do the same crimes?

Just doing what Dems have been doing for years. Pander and try to get their vote, then piss on them when you get elected.

Thank goodness the GOP candidates are finally figuring this out.

Have you been paying attention to the ideas he's floating in these communities? It's far different from the great society "pandering" dems have been doing to keep blacks on the plantation

Why yes I have, I am one of the biggest Paul supporters around. I am just stating the obvious. He is reaching people the GOP has failed to because they wouldn't pander to them. I seriously doubt though that his election will lower the incarceration rate or sentence length of African Americans as well.

Between the war on drugs and the welfare state, it is.

The solution is less government across the board.

quote:

"Stop trying to control. Let go of fixed plans and concepts, and the world will govern itself.

The more prohibitions you have, the less virtuous people will be. The more weapons you have, the less secure people will be. The more subsidies you have, the less self-reliant people will be.

Therefore the Master says: I let go of the law, and people become honest. I let go of economics, and people become prosperous. I let go of religion, and people become serene. I let go of all desire for the common good, and the good becomes common as grass.”
