My grandparents didn't have AC in their house until they got window units years later. There was a big fan in the hall ceiling. It had louvers that would open up when you turned the fan on. I thought it was the most baddest thing in the world when I was a youngin.

I grew up in a house with an attic fan. Our beds were by windows and at night that air would blow over us. Best sleep in the world. If I didn't live in the south, I would have one.

This. And we lived in New Orleans. At that time, people didn't lock doors or windows.

I was just talking about this the other day! We had an attic fan in our first house and my sister and I used to fight over who got to turn it on. We loved that big whoosh! Lol! It would get pretty chilly at night too.

I grew up with one. I wish I had one in my new home, never slept better. Stuff a little damp in the AM when you woke up though.

I had one in the last house I owned. It was built in 1947 and the fan still worked great. When ever a cool front would come down I would open all the doors and fire it up. One section of hall was like a wind tunnel.

We had one. It would make this awesome noise when you turned it on and I loved it because I thought the house was going to take off. My mom hated it and never let me play with it, though.

Had one in both houses I was raised in. I think the noise helped me sleep better than the clammy breeze coming in the window.

My dad used to threaten us about turning on the fan without opening all the windows first. He was convinced it would suck the ceilings in.

Had one growing up. We may have used it two or three times when the ac broke.
My first house had one, and I took it out and put up a attic access. I'd hit the string every time I pass. I'm 46.

We had one in my parents house before renovating. When we renovated, my dad had them take it out and he made it into a huge box fan for the patio. Sucker pushes some wind!
