Amazon’s space at 7 West 34th Street, across from the Empire State Building in Midtown, would function as a mini-warehouse, with limited inventory for same-day delivery within New York, product returns and exchanges, and pickups of online orders. A customer could, for example, order a pan in the morning and pick it up that evening in time to use for dinner.

Amazon also may consider using the space to showcase inventory, particularly its devices like the Kindle e-readers, Fire smartphone or Fire TV set-top box, according to people familiar with the company’s thinking.

The reverse Blockbuster.

I don't see this being anything more than a short-term gimmicky kind of thing for a VERY small niche customer...the whole point of Amazon is that it's online and you don't have to go to a store.

But that being said, they are obviously business geniuses, so good on them.

No, but they have a distribution center in Texas, that's why you have to pay sales tax.

Makes same day delivery on some items easier. That's the real point of putting a store in the middle of manhattan.

Don't they have distribution centers in just about every state?

Eh, not really. You could put a warehouse outside of the city for much cheaper and still make those deliveries.

This is much more about marketing and branding than making deliveries IMO.

First thing that came to mind. Inevitably we are going to get a distribution center or some other amazon presence in louisiana soon though, and it will be a sad day. For a lot of products, the lack of sales tax is the only thing that makes amazon cheaper.

Would be in their best interest to pick a limited number of states they want to operate in and put their distribution centers at or near their borders, such as Beaumont or Jasper.

Earnings aren't as relevant when Wall Street buys into to what you're doing.
