5.2 yards per carry (trailing only the Seahawks), 7 rushing touchdowns

That's pretty impressive considering our most productive back has been injured.

This also confirms what we've all been saying that our offensive salvation lies in establishing the run to keep defenses honest.

Despite our success running the ball, we are 2nd in the league in pass attempts and right in the middle of the NFL in rushing attempts.

If our 2 "Pro Bowl" guards would start playing like they're supposed to...this offense will be nasty

Just imagine if we ran it consistently.

Everything would open up.

Imagine that...

I better see Ingram get 20 carries vs. Detroit if he continues to produce the way he has been.

I agree that we need to commit to the run, of course.

But I think part of the reason we're running at 5.2 ypc is that we we run so sparingly.

We have a damn strong stable of Rbs, each with a strong want for more touches. All of them are hard runners(Thomas is ridiculous) who need to be fed that rock. We need to play downhill and display toughness....or we can throw it around the yard and go 8~8 as par the course for Paytons teams without strong rushing attacks.

agreed...we run sparingly and have a dynamic passing attack.

Payton wants to run "efficiently", and we've done that.

...stop the turnovers and fix the interior pass blocking (they go hand-in-hand in some cases), and this is the best offense in the league

the Saints are #16 in the league in rushing attempts.

I figured we'd be lower in rushing attempts.

It seems this board is on fire with how good of a running team we are.

Has the thought that maybe defenses are playing 5 and 6 db's 85% of the snaps crossed your mind? I really think these rushing stats are deceiving. The browns literally had plays with every db in their rotation on the field, same with the cowboys.

Balancing the run/pass will ultimately help the offense as a whole by opening up the passing game, but I really don't think we are some power rushing team nor do I think we should gameplan that way bc PFF says we should.

ETA:

It would be interesting to see rush stats with a fb on the field vs singleback. Would indicate how big personnel vs talent is.

Hmm....

Then if there's 5-6 DBs back there, why don't we RUN some more

Then, when those 5-6 DBs become 4-5 DBs and are closer to the LOS, we go playaction for a TD. That seemed to work in previous years.

No one cares that we're a power running team, but if there's an opening to run and gain 5-6 yards, you do it and control the tempo of the game. As opposed to us trying to throw the ball in to double/triple coverage.

Offenses take what the defenses give. If they want to put 5-6 DBs out there, maybe its time to just slowly run the ball and take the yards given to us so we can continue the drive instead of going 3 and out and putting our defense in a bind.

"Yeah, well its what they expect you to do after a 28 yard run. Run some more. So we go empty backfield to confuse the opponent."

Well... One could argue our numbers would be worse had he stayed healthy.

This is Ingram we're talking about right?

Moreover, it's crazy how well the offensive line run blocks but then can't pass protect for shite.
