Herniated disc L5: Orthopedist or neurologist help

Two weeks ago I hurt my back and ended up getting a spinal steroid epidural but I am still in massive pain. I was told by the ortho that my options are rest, another spinal epidural, or surgery. I have a lot of sciatic pain, especially when I first wake up. I assume he is going to refer me to a neurologist, does anyone have a recommendation of one in Baton Rouge.

Usually if the first ESI doesn't work it's a waste to do it again. I would go see Dr. Scrantz.

Microdiscectomy brah. Takes about 2 hrs. And you'll wake up pain free

I have suffered with L4 & L5 herniation for over 30 years. I finally said enough about 6 years ago and was able to get a referral to Dr. Scrantz. He acknowledged the problem but recommended physical therapy first. After 15 sessions, my pain was reduced by over 90% and have not had any real problems since. I was a total non-believer that therapy would do any real good but I was wrong.
The only problem is getting in to see him. W/O a referral from your regular doctor, you may have to wait 4-6 months.

Live with it for a year doing physical therapy and NSAIDS and muscle relaxers ( stay away from narcotics) if after a year it is still that bad then look into surgery

Have L4 and L5 herniated (also S1 nerve impingement)...went to therapy...didn't help...took muscle relaxers...didn't help...but I do get regular Toradol injections.
I feel like it helps out a bunch.
And I am relatively young...
I'm going to need some type of surgery by the time I am 50

Oberlander at Neuromedical center performed a 3-level fusion(l4-s1)on me a year and a half ago for more problems than I have room to list here. I am 100% better. Check him out.

Since it was just 2 weeks ago you should try rest and the different therapies, maybe it'll work. I went through all that for a year and it did not work for me so I opted for surgery. Best decision of my life, Dr. Paul Waguespack at Neuromedical Center did mine but I've never heard a bad thing about any of the surgeons there. That is miserable pain, best of luck

To those that have had the microdisectomy, what was the recovery like. How much time did you have to take off from work. I'm seeing neurosurgeon next week for mine.

If you got a desk job you should be able to go back to work in a few days. Any kind of lifting and it'll prolly be closer to a 4-6 weeks. I had mine done in 2009. So it may be a little different

If it's not ruptured, stick to epidural and nsaids and patience. Very very painful. Been there. Ruptured that one. Couldn't drive sleep sit nothing. I could make a pain shoot down my leg by looking down while sitting at desk. Good luck bud. It finally got better and all good now.

To the OP; I would see one of the recommended guys at Neuromedical in Baton Rouge. When surgery is indicated depends on how conservative treatment works, if you have weakness, and how bad the pain becomes.
