Is Mike Trout really the greatest player in baseball

For some reason he gets a lot of hype and credit and is called the best player in the game, not saying he sucks but look at his numbers this year:
.287, 36 HR, 111 RBI
Meanwhile here are Morgan Ensberg's numbers from 2005:
.283, 36 HR, 101 RBI
The difference being Ensberg actually produced in the playoffs, but I don't remember people calling Ensberg the greatest player in baseball that year or the GOAT
You think to call a player a GOAT or best player in the game that they'd put up better numbers than what Trout did this year

Trout steals a lot of bases (although not as many as he did the last few years), he plays a premium defensive position and he plays it maybe better than anyone, he gets on base, he has a great slugging %, and he's very likable and reportedly great in that clubhouse.
So yeah, he's really good.

That is the difference right there. Different ball game then. Nowadays, what Trout is doing is the best in baseball, in 2005 it would be above average.

Ensburg played in the steroid era so he is overshadowed.
Trout is likely a top 5 player when you exclude pitchers.

That was painful to read.
Trout is AVERAGING those stats over 3 years before his prime while that was an outlier year smack in the middle of Ensberg's prime.
Trout also hits in a less batter friendly park, is probably the second best defensive CF in baseball, and provides value in stealing.

I would say Trout's numbers are better because they actually happened in 2014.
Trout hit 287/377/561 this year which for him, is a step back. But still pretty great, Check out his ordinal rankings in all MLB:
HR 4th
RBI 2nd
AVG 31st
OBP 14th
SLG 3rd
OPS+ 4th
Compare that to Ensberg's 2005 ranks and his 283/388/557 slash line
HR 13th
RBI 26th
AVG 68th
OBP 20th
SLG 15th
OPS+ 15th

I would put Cano and Cruz over Abreu.
Trout will and should win.

For all his batting woes, Jackie Bradley Jr. is probably the best defensive CF in the game right now.

Total Fielding Runs is an imperfect defensive metric, but it's one of the best we got. Trout was worth 6 runs this year above an average CF, which ranked 20th in the Majors.
Trout is an amazing player, but his defense has been wildly overrated. He's very good defensively. He is not Torri Hunter in his prime.
