I'm not saying everyone will save money, but to say ATT is trying to screw people now with next plan is just not accurate when you run the numbers. They were screwing people before and they are screwing you with your "unlimited data" plan. Run your speed test when you hit 3gb of data then again 5gb of data.

I was sharing 550 minutes with unlimited data, wife had 2gb of data, unlimited text. We were paying about 145/mo. Now we are on a family plan with 6 lines, 30 gb of data, unlimited talk and text. Total bill is about $225.

I think what people are missing is that this only effects you if you are on a mobile share plan.

The 10GB mobile share plan regularly charges $40 per line, if the phone isn't paid off. If its your phone (paid off) or a financed phone (NEXT plan), you get the 25$ discount, per line.

If you switched to the 10GB for $100 per month, and $15 per line, you lose your $25 discount if you upgrade with the 2 year contract and $199 (for the 16GB) phone. If you use the NEXT plan, you keep your $25 discount, you just pay the full price of the phone over 24 months (or 18 if you choose that one).

I just got off the phone with AT&T and she said I can go into any store and they can reverse my 2-year contract to Next, and refund my $299 + $40 fee.

Just did this. Got $40 upgrade fee refund and refund for the phone.

yeah, it is a lot to comprehend, but if you look at the two side by side....its not usually a ripoff

it did sound like some people were incurring extra (new) charges when renewing contracts that weren't mobile share plans.....as if AT&T was trying to drive people away from their old unlimited data plans

i'm not sure thats the case, but thats what some posters seemed to think....since they said their line access charge was going up more than it used to be

so my wife just upgraded to the iphone 6

"Upgraded" = signed a new 2 year contract, got the phone at a "discounted" price, will pay for the discount over 2 years at $25/month

FWIW I was initially very against the new way ATT is doing things, but after researching it and confirming my thoughts with an ATT rep, I can say I'm 100% in favor of what they have done. It makes more sense and is better for the consumer.

Its not. Depending on your plan and what value you put on upgrading, you can save money doing Next.

If this did happen, then they are being screwed and need to call. It shouldn't effect their line access charge unless they switched to the share plans.

This will show you how you would do better on contact vs NEXT. If you go the whole time on the NEXT plan you will do better.

Not across the board. I did the math over a two year situation (3 phones) and staying on my current plan and upgrading phones (not next plan) will save me almost $500 over the full 2 years. However, this is all three of us getting brand new phones right now. I probably wouldn't do that. So, if staged correctly, I could probably save a little money, monthly, and pay off the phones early.

BTW, I'm guessing if you go Next plan, you can pay off the phone early. I don't see why they wouldn't allow it. Its the same thing.

This sums up my situation exactly as well. At first I was against and thought it was a scam. It will in fact save me money over the two years. I have 5 smart phones on my account for what it's worth.

one thing that i think may make it better for the consumer is if phone manufacturers start pricing their phones more competitively

theyve never really had to since the consumers weren't directly footing the bill for the phone....but now with the next plan, you stand to save more money by buying a discounted phone outright....which may cause the new/used cell phone market to compete with each other more, hopefully helping to drive the prices down

a next/edge plan paired with a cheaper nexus phone could save a person a lot of money

There is a fatal flaw in this comparison. You are only seeing comparison if you are using the share plan. My wife, son, and I currently have individual monthly data rates.

I already said why. Over 24 months, my current plan saves me $500 if we all get brand new phones. I can detail the math out for you if you'd like.

possibly not wanting to give up older unlimited plans

No, no need. If it works for you or you at least think it does, then that's all that matters.

Can't, because I never come close to hitting that amount. I'm aware it's throttled. I don't care about it being unlimited. I care that my 24-month cost is cheaper if I stay with it.

like others have said....throttled or not, they are still one of the cheapest data plans you can get

isn't it like 30 dollars per line?

even if you only use 3gb a month and never get to the throttling point...it may still be the cheapest option for you
