Where is chavis failing more? Schematically or developing LBs?

We've discussed the failures of his scheme plenty lately....but for a supposed LB guru the play of our linebackers has been pretty bad the last few years. We signed about 20 LBs two years ago and only 1 has developed into a halfway decent player, he continues to trot out welter, who is probably the least talented MLB we've had in quite a while, because he can't coach up ANYONE to take his spot, he'll, the best LBs during his tenure ( shep, Riley, and minter) weren't even recruited by him, everything else has been meh to poor.

Weak up the middle and not providing enough help.

That's what he was known for...I don't know what happened to that.

If we had two studly DTs in the middle his "scheme" would be working perfectly.
Scheme is only there to take advantage of your players skill set. You need a full compliment of skill compared to the other team before your scheme can become effective.

it is hard to evaluate talent when you refuse to leave your office and go on the recruiting trail.

Having his defense on the field for a majority of the game because our offense is so inept never helps either.
But seriously, this defense can't stop the run consistently. The only success well see if when an opposing offense has to pass to catch up and can play to our strength in the secondary. When they can remain completely balanced, we're shite out of luck.

Sheppard and Riley were recruited to Tennessee by Chavis and there was a specific article mentioning that. Minter was coached by Chavis the entire time. We have had issues at that position since Minter left.
I wouldn't trust anyone from East Feliciana Parish to be able to learn their way out of a wet paper bag.

They don't help themselves when they take every third down off.

Defensive LIne is the biggest problem on the D.

Won't recruit or evaluate talent for suitability to his scheme. Development looks shoddy. The scheme is shite.
Chavis is mailing it in. He's had two decent years, one great year 2011, and two very mediocre years, and now he's on track to set SEC records. Tennessee fans and negatigers were warning us about him even when he looked like a breath of fresh air after the 2008 debacle.

None of the above.

Keeping Welter on the field. You could make a highlight film on bad reads and not getting off blocks. I saw where we are worst in the nation in running up the middle and QB runs. He is the main contributor to this stat.

Some more athleticism would be nice.

well we need to have a chat with brick there as well, because we're either missing on evaluations or these guys are being severely undercoached. Either way, its not good.

It is a combination, we are missing on guys, we aren't coaching them up and they are overall weak. teams toss our DT around like a rag doll.

The only way Chavis sheme can work is if he has elite athletes at every position. The Dline is severely lacking in talent. 2 out of 3 LB positions are pretty awful. Secondary is still playing solid without a pass rush and having to constantly look to play the run. The only way to get around our issues is for the DC to draw up a scheme that confuses the Offense and allows the D to hide some of their weaknesses. IMO, Chavis is entirely incapable of this.

Starting and giving significant playing time to DJ Welter is a failure in itself. Beckwith consistently makes more plays than Welter and it's obvious plays that anyone could notice.

Brick Haley has gots to go
Of course, that's Chavis' guy.

God as much as I loathe Ed O we could at least use the guy's fire, this D just looks punchless.
