Sub Pop has said that the new father john misty is on 2 discs playing at 45 rpm for the sound quality.

Do you or anyone else have any insights into the science or reasons why that may be?

When you spin a disc faster, the "rumble" factor, or "wow and flutter" as it is known as, lessens. You also have the same amount of etched "data", if you will, for a given time period spread out over a longer stretch of record groove.

The higher speed allows the lower frequencies to tighten up a bit, and allows some high frequency distortions to be pushed out of the audible range.

I have plenty of 45 rpm LPs, however, over the last couple years, if given the option, I pick the 33.3 rpm. The reason for me is that the sonic gain is not that noticeable on a really high end table and also that it gets to be a real pain in the arse to have to flip the LP every 13 minutes!!

I say buy one and try it--Fleetwood Mac Rumors is a good start.

BTW--they are also 50% more expensive!

I own several 33.3 RPM albums that are double LP and only have 3-4 songs on each side. In fact, it seems like most of the albums I own are like that. I don't see much of a difference in how much I have to flip the album over.

Nice haul!

I've got the Grissman LP, but would love to hear that Leo Kottke album--I have always liked his stuff.

I had an audiophile meet at my place last weekend and played some of the Garcia/Grisman/Rice CD "The Pizza Tapes" to a group of 10 audio geeks and most of them really dug it. The recording quality of that album is nothing short of fantastic.

I'm new to all of this I'm looking for a basic setup. I have an old PL-510A Pioneer turntable with a RCA output. I ordered this last week because I don't have a receiver yet. Will the setup work like that? I have some basic Sony speakers to start out with.

I have listened to the Grisman album a couple of times already. Love it.

Listening to Kotke now before work. Really great so far.
