quote:

Cartoons, like all media, are a reflection of the time in which they were created. Which is why we can look back and laugh at the future envisioned by "The Jetsons" or boggle at Donald Duck starring in a WWII propaganda movie.

It's also why we cringe when re-watching "Dumbo" and see the clear racial stereotyping of the crows, or why we wonder how the world ever thought "What Makes The Red Man Red?" song in "Peter Pan" was a good idea. So when Amazon Prime put this disclaimer up in front of "Tom & Jerry" on their instant stream, it seemed reasonable.

""Tom & Jerry" shorts may depict some ethnic and racial prejudices that were once commonplace in American society. Such depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. While not representing the Warner Bros. view of today's society, these shorts are being presented as they were originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed."

But no. Pointing out obvious racism in cartoons created 75 years ago, is apparently censorship of the highest order and the Internet went accordingly berserk.

It is funny to look back and see kid shows and cartoons that were very racist a while back.

That sounds completely reasonable and sensible. No wonder people are so upset.

Tom & Jerry was my son's favorite show growing up. As an nin year old, the only thing he ever notes about black people is how much better they are at basketball.

This is where they went wrong. Let people know what they're watching if you feel more specific labeling is helpful, but don't put your limits on their behavior by telling them they shouldn't laugh at a mouse in black face. It'd be like putting a "If you think this movie is hilarious, you're why movies suck today." disclaimer in front of Adam Sandler movies.

Nothing tops "Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs". Jaw dropping blatant racism.

I bought several seasons of Tom & Jerry off iTunes several years ago, and they had the same BS politically correct preamble back then. The racial overtones ARE pretty dramatic, but I think of it as just period artwork. Although it's from an entirely different generation, it's really not incredibly different from reading a Twain novel. And, looking past the stereotypes, vintage T&J shows--not the remade crap they show on TV now--is impressive in both the visuals and the soundtracks. For some reason, the remade versions totally scrap those wonderful musical scores.

There is some merit to this. Just because it was the norm doesn't make it excusable.

Reminds me of the celebration of that KKK movie from back in the day everyone calls a classic.
