So I spent two hours in the police station

Had to get fingerprinted for a certification. $10 for the fingerprints, $60 for the background check, $225 for the certification - its all a racket.
I had to wait an hour and a half. No harm done - but I was in the lobby of a suburban police station and overheard everyone who came in.
First person was a fat, middle aged woman wearing cowboy boots and daisy dukes. Her 15-year old son took her 2013 Buick without her permission and she was gonna press charges. She had her sister there for support.
Then came a lady that her son took her credit card and went on a shopping spree. The bank apparently needed a police report. They explained that they would have to arrest the son. She left without pressing charges.
Then a guy came in and he was mad that his wife took something from him. He wanted to press charges against her.
Then another woman came in and she had an identity theft issue. Same thing - when she found out that she would have to press charges, she left.
Lots of trash in the suburbs.

For real entertainment value, go spend a day sitting in the gallery of any city or county courtroom, especially if they have hearings for restraining orders on the docket.
