does anybody have a tip for getting an edge on these things. They are made out of some really tough steel and it is taking me forever.

Is this an old ka-bar or a newer one?

How old? You Prolly have a knife made by a guy who made knives for KBar out of D2 tool Steel. They guy is from Arkie and. I can't remember his name but doesn't matter, you need a diamond sharpener or diamond stone if you know how to use it. DMT MAKES THEM. You might also look into a chefs choice 120 diamond electric sharpener, $89. Or maybe a WORK SHARP might be able to sharpen D2.

Any sharpener will work. They are 1095 plain carbon steel, 1095 Cro-Van, or maybe D2 for few specific versions. I use a belt sharpener with 420 grit but a simple Arkansas stone will put a fine edge on one. These are thick-bladed combat knives so don't try putting a 20 degree edge on one.

What about sharpening a knife with a black coated blade. Does the black just peel off when sharpening?

It's just a phosphate coating, sharpener will go right through it. That's why you don't try to put to shallow of an edge on these knives, just exposes more metal for corrosion and 1095 rusts very easily.

Get it cerakoted or just strip it all off and start keeping a light coat of oil on the blade.. That must be a polymer coating as the large ka-bars coating won't flake off since it's etched into the surface of the steel.
