Looks like Apple may be launching their 27" iMacs w/ 5k Retina displays (5120 x 2880) this month.

I'm probably gonna pull the trigger when these come out...

Some penises and vaginas shouldn't be seen at that resolution.

Yeah, probably $2500 to $3000 if I had to bet.

Dell's releasing an ultrasharp with that resolution, and it's expected to be $2500 alone. Given that, I would expect $3299 minimum for a 5K-res iMac.

$3300 at a minimum seems a little steep. I don't think they are going to tack $1500 onto the price of a 27" iMac for Retina. If you look at the difference between a 13" MB with and without Retina, it's only a few hundred difference. I look for it to be $2500 to $3000.

Here's the basis of my estimate:

The current price of a 27" 1440P iMac starts at $1799.

It uses the same panel as Apple's $999 Thunderbolt Display.

Adding up the OEM/retail values of the rest of the components and Apple's general premium (I actually did this in another thread), $799 for the hardware and chassis design is reasonably close enough to component value of the rest of the system.

Around the same time, Dell displayed its equivalently beautiful ultrasharp 1440P 27" display for the same price, though it has since dropped in price while the price of the Apple monitor remains the same.

Similarly, Dell is set to unveil a 5K ultrasharp next month, and a press release confirms a $2,499.99 price tag.

If the Apple sets a similar price for this 5k display, which will no doubt use the exact same panel as the Dell and therefore carry the same production cost outside of the stand/bezel, it's reasonable to predict that $2,499 + $799 would be ballpark starting MSRP. That's a conservative guess, because they're probably going to have to amp up the GPU beyond a paltry single mid-range mobile Kepler to run that monitor at 5120 x 2880.

Depending on price, I may have to get one to replace my iMac and also use it as a monitor for my gaming PC.

I don't know man, if phones can push 1440p now on a tiny battery, I would think that 5k would be relatively easy on a desktop, possibly even without a discrete GPU.*

They are going to want the imac to do more powerful things than phones though.

Isn't that where the Intel CPU comes in?

Not if it's graphics intensive. Intel has improved their integrated graphics a lot but it's still very limited and at 5k that would be very exposed.

good bump. I think everyone is kinda shocked at 2499. Still wouldn't buy a first gen though. the first gen rMBP had quite a few display/graphics issues.

Do iMacs typically get the chip upgrade when they come out? That's the one I might wait for. Not that I'm getting a 5k display though. Regardless of the tech, the price tag wouldn't justify what I would use it for.

I doubt they'll bump it to Broadwell being that it's pretty soon. They'll announce the next gen at WWDC with Skylake would be my guess.
