Game of Thrones question (CONTAINS SPOILERS THROUGH S1E9 on Page2)

So, the wife and I finally started watching Game of Thrones. She never thought she would like it, I thought I might enjoy it, but 8 episodes into the first season it is blowing us away. Anyways, onto the questions:
I have avoided reading anything about this show, but I remember seeing something about George R. R. Martin hasn't released the fifth book (I think it's the fifth anyway), is this in any way going to show the slow down? I know there are 4 completed seasons, does each one follow the corresponding book?
Are the books worth the read? I borrowed the first one from someone, but I worry by the time I finish it, we will be caught up with season 4.
Finally, I can only imagine and hope that the rest of the seasons live up to the first, am I right?

I think 5 books have been released. The show runners know the endgame though, and will likely pass up the books in a couple of seasons.
The books are worth it. Lots of detail.
The first two seasons are basically book 1 and 2, while seasons 3 and 4 are book 3 plus some things from books 4 and 5.
The show is awesome through 4 seasons.

They are absolutely worth the read, even if you have seen some of the show. I would advise you to just slow the frick down with the show watching and read the books first. But the show is great on its own merit.

Depends, some of the novelty of the show wears off but the story gets better and the characters get more interesting.

They're 5 books released, and the sixth shouldn't be far off. But no it shouldn't affect it. The creators have said they want 7 seasons, 8 tops, and they'll be fully caught up and ahead of some plots by the end of next season. There's already a pretty big scene the readers have only guessed at, but was confirmed in the show.

There's an 888 page thread still going strong on this site discussing only the novels, so yeah, I'd say they're worth the read.

The one thing that bothers me about not reading the books first are the new set of names that seemed to be introduced each episode. I am scared to google Game of Thrones anything, but my wife sends me a nice link detailing each episode, so that helps. Will probably dive into the first book very soon!

You at least need to look up Robert's Rebellion to give yourself the background on how Robert got the throne, and what part the other houses played into it. It helps out a lot when watching the show.

Check. The site my wife found that gives the recap had its own for Roberts Rebellion.

Sure. Will probably watch it tonight, but I already cannot stand the Lannisters. Well, Tyrion is funny and I find myself pulling for him. Cersei and Jaime can frick right off. And that little frickin prick Joffrey, what a dick (although I don't think he carries the Lannister name). Tywin was just introduced an ep or two ago, but he seems like a dick too.

The relationship between Tywin and his children is one of the most-fascinating aspects of the show. Each of the children has qualities that Tywin values - Jaime for his martial prowess, Cersei for her ruthlessness and extreme ambition, and Tyrion for his intellect. However, none of the Lannister kids possess all three of these traits, which frustrates Tywin to no end.

I'm not really into reading source material when I already know so much about the plot, but I've decide to give these a shot. We'll just have to make a book virgin pinky swear not to become condescending little dingleberries after we are finished reading them.
