Interesting article to say the least. The most shocking name on this list is Malcom Jenkins who has 3 int already this season with Philly(did he even have 3 int the hole time he played for the Saints?). I knew Sproles has something left in the tank. Thinking back now did the Saints make the right move? I believe we did.

Obviously looking at Jenkins season now, it's easy to say we could have paid him probably less than half of Byrd and probably would have been better off. But hindsight is 20/20. Congrats to Jenkins for finally putting it together, but he wouldn't be on another team had he ever done it here.

I knew Sproles would do well. Hard to say he wouldn't help us out, but i don't think having him would change our season drastically.

Jenkins had 6 career ints with the Saints, never more than 2 in a season. Sproles is the only one that I was bummed about leaving.

Jenkins was no good, period. How many easy picks bounced off his hands/chest? Sure I've seen some DBs miss a few tackles but none in the way of Jenkins bad angling all the way out of the camera frame.

All this MJ sh!t is already old.
I wish him well where ever he plays as he seemed a good dude as a teammate.
But he sucked here under 3 DC's or at best barely average on occasion. You can't change his history with US. Period.

I don't think any DB we draft or sign is going to play well here if things continue.

Jenkins left, became awesome.
Byrd was awesome, became average here.

True, but it would change a lot IMO.

Talib, Bush, White, KV, and Bush would have been a good combo. Sunseri could have taken over the Harper role if needed.

Then draft a Dlineman or ILB in the 2nd round. Maybe even a Center.

Obviously all hindsight, b/c I was ecstatic about Byrd forcing turnovers for us.

I just don't get all the missed tackles. Even Jenkins improved greatly on that under Ryan. Now Byrd has his career high in MT already with Bush and Vaccaro having more than last year too

I thought the defensive scheme was fine last game too. We just didn't make any plays on 3rd down. We were in position to

This is failed logic. I don't know why people are thinking that because Sproles and Jenkins are doing so well with Philly that it means they would have done that well with us. Look at Byrds stats from before coming here. Why doesn't he have any ints with us since he had so many last year. It's our defense as a whole. No pass rush from up front will cause any DB to look like crap. And if Sproles was with us, he wouldn't be doing any better than any of the backs we have now.

Good point is good point. I think a lot of the blame goes on our defensive coaches and the scheme they are running.

Jenkins has been in the right places at the right time. He had one INT that he jumped a deep dig for (I'll give him that one), one tipped, and one overthrown to him. Every blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.

Anyone who would prefer Jenkins over Byrd be it for money or talent is overreacting. Don't jump off the bandwagon just yet. Byrd's a great safety, the defense as a unit is playing poorly. It reflects on everyone involved. At least Byrd takes better angles.

I am pretty sure picks come a lot times when there is pressure on the qb... Yeah, something we just do not have right now.

Completely agree.
I don't care if you have Dion Sanders, Ronnie Lott, Ed Reed, and Richard Sherman all in their prime as your defensive backfield. If they have to cover for 8-10 seconds because of lack of pressure they will look 'average' as well.

It doesn't help the secondary at all when there's no pass rush whatsoever. As much time as opposing QB have in the pocket, I can sit back there and find the open man and complete a pass.

That's horrendous. Especially after the stellar play we saw last year. It's the same competition, the same scheme, and the same players for the most part. I don't understand what's wrong.

I said it in another thread, and I'll say it in this one.

I don't care what any of them do for another team, they weren't doing it for this team, and they wouldn't be if they were still on this team.

Our problems have nothing to do with letting Harper, Jenkins, and Sproles go. We had two guys last year combine for 24.5 sacks, that are now on pace for 12 sacks. I think the guys we let go this preseason, Butler and Champ, could have helped us more this season than Sproles, Jenkins, and Harper. I get why Butler and Champ were cut, but it would be hard for them to be worse than what we are putting out there right now.
