DAT: 2014 Season in Review

2014 Record: 70-92
Well fellas, you've gotta be happy with the improvement this season. The Astros improved 19 games from 2013 to 2014 and won 70 games for the first time since 2010.
Season MVP: Jose Altuve.
The little guy will bring home the Astros first ever batting title and finished the season with 225 hits. The Astros simply would not have won as many games as they did without Altuve's multiple hit games, and offensive run production. Hats off to the little fella.
Starting Pitcher of the Year: Dallas Keuchel
Dallas anchored the rotation this year to the tune of a 12-9 record with a 2.93 ERA. Good for 6th in the AL. He also pitched over 200 innings for the first time in his young career. An AL All Star snub, Dallas was really on when the slider was working. Props to the Kid!
Reliever of the Year: Tony Sipp
Tony was our most consistent arm out of the bullpen this year. An April acquisition, Tony had the best season of his career going 4-3 with a 3.38 ERA. He was called on to close several times, notching 4 saves in 6 opportunities. He plays a pretty mean outfield too. Congrats Tony!
Rookie of the Year: George Springer
The Summer of George! His home run hot streak in the midsummer months was nothing short of spectacular. His energy and enthusiasm bolstered the clubhouse to a great run from May 11th to the All Star Break. Even though he missed the last 2 months of the season, he accomplished so much in 3 months, this really was a no brainer.
Comeback Player of the Year: Chris Carter
Boy we were ready to wash our hands of this guy. But what a 2nd half he had. 37 homers with a slash of .227/.308/.491, it seems like the light may finally be turning on for the big guy.
Newcomer(s) of the Year: Collin McHugh & Kike Hernandez
What can you say about ole Jabroni? What a season he had. 11-9 with a 2.73 ERA, he came up just a few innings short of qualifying for one of the best ERA's in baseball. Hands down the best transaction the Astros made this year.
And Kike came on board right at the time we needed him the most. He provided much needed utility help in the infield while hitting for a .248 average. Arguably the most UNPOPULAR transaction by the Astros this season.

It was a successful year guys. Thanks to all of you for reviving the DAT and making it for quality entertainment throughout the course of the season. I'll be starting the DAT Offseason thread tomorrow, but for today, let's reflect on the accomplishments of this 2014 squad and a very much improved season.

Would not mind this. I thought he was older than he is.

Well, Gardenhire would have to get with the whole sabermetric crap for this hire to work
Posted on 9/29/14 at 12:50 pm to TXGunslinger10
How many games out of first place and from a playoff slot ? That's the stat, which is most important !

If he did I would love the hire

I think it's a GREAT question....don't the astros have to be better than most of the teams ,in their own division, to make the playoffs ? Just trying to gauge just how much "improvement" is needed !

I'm just happy that we are seeing improvement finally.
Carter was definitely a pleasant surprise the back half of this season. I was ready to trade him for a bucket of balls at the beginning of the season.

You are very well known to troll these threads. I can't take anything you ever say seriously.

19 game improvement.
2nd best improvement in baseball...only behind the Angels

Serious question: Is this the offseason they try to add a big FA or two to really bolster the improvement? After all, we've got plenty of cash. Or do we wait one more season to let the young guys develop more?
Posted on 9/29/14 at 1:55 pm to elprez00
I doubt they try to do it this offseason. There really isn't anyone who would make a lot of sense outside of Headley, and then you have to convince them to actually sign.
Posted on 9/29/14 at 2:07 pm to ShaneTheLegLechler
As much as id like Headley, it just doesn't make sense. We would need an older stopgap there if we did anything at all. We don't want to roadblock Colin Moran
Personally, I'm fine riding Dominguez until the trade deadline if he has a good year.

I'm bumping this shite because I worked hard on the OP. Lol

I like Marisnick in Center and Fowler in LF.
I know Defensive metrics aren't great, but they show Marisnick as an immensely better fielder than Fowler.
Would be a pretty great outfield either way.

What's the thoughts on Singleton's season?
Posted on 9/29/14 at 3:37 pm to TXGunslinger10
Yeah I agree. I would rather get someone like Alberto Callaspo who can play 3B and some other infield spots and would be cheap.
