Taking these figures into account, a rough calculation suggests that in the last five years, your chances of being killed by a terrorist are about one in 20 million. This compares annual risk of dying in a car accident of 1 in 19,000; drowning in a bathtub at 1 in 800,000; dying in a building fire at 1 in 99,000; or being struck by lightning at 1 in 5,500,000. In other words, in the last five years you were four times more likely to be struck by lightning than killed by a terrorist.

Those figures don't help sell the fear needed for more warmongering.

No kidding.

Yet, we are supposed to fear the ISIS threat that has infiltrated our society so thoroughly that we should fear walking outside.

I think most rational thinkers assumed this without the validation.

Just goes to show, that people do what they are told.

I stay inside as much as possible when there's lightning because it can be dangerous. I also lock my doors and protect myself even though statistically I'm much more likely to die of cancer or heart disease. It's a quirk of human nature I guess.

well we're letting terrorists in as fast as we can, we may have to pop a few more false flags to keep you children cowed into living with the concept of no right to privacy from the state as long as it's all "for your own good".

This is a bit of a red herring, imo. I seriously doubt, at this point, that very many Americans are cowering in the corner and thinking they are in serious jeopardy of becoming a victim of a terrorist attack.

That being said, it appears to be a being threat which needs to be condemned and confronted. One problem is, there are some people who, for various reasons, want to sweep the problem of radical Islam under the table. There are some here who won't either acknowledge or condemn this problem. That's insane.

When a woman in Moore, OK is beheaded in the name of Islam, we need to be paying attention to it.

PS - and of course, people living in places like Iraq, Syria and Israel have every right to be extremely concerned about Muslim violence.

People are killed under the name of various radical ideologies (including religions) all the time. If it becomes epidemic, I'll worry about it.

The only terrorism I fear is that of the liberals.

Roger, I guess I've missed any beheadings by any group other than Muslims.

Perhaps you can fill me in.

They are approaching the problem in the wrong manner.

I don't think anyone in the U.S. is cowers in fear of terrorism in their daily lives. That's how it should be.

The concern is how political Islam will shape the world one or two generations from now.

That's all great if you're only worried about yourself. That they likely aren't a threat to me personally doesn't mean they aren't a threat to the country. Keeping the personal threat in perspective is great, but that's about all those figures are good for.

Paying attention is fine. Extrapolating it into something way bigger than it actually is is not.

What a ridiculous "perspective". Per capita statistics are an excellent way to measure the things that are worth spending resources on. And the statistics are very clear: the world is at very very tiny risk from terrorism.

It's very unlikely that I'll be murdered, but I still want cops on the street. It's still a mortal threat.

Our corner of the world perhaps, for now. What kind of effect would another successful attack on the US have on the security state? On our willingness to fight more wars? A terrorist attack can have a far greater effect on our national psyche than the per capita casualties would suggest, making them largely meaningless outside offering some limited perspective.

You're so much more likely to be killed by a cop than a terrorist.
