Question on preordering a phone

So, I'm looking to preorder the new 6+ and had a few questions on preorders....
- Does the company(whether preordering direct from Apple or through a retailer), does your card get charged immediately or upon pickup of the device?
- When preordering with a new contract, I'm assuming the contract starts the day the phone is activated and not ordered?

Verizon doesn't charge until pickup or the device is shipped.

It depends. If you're on the Next plan, the only thing you pay upfront is the tax.
