Denver students walk out of class to protest conservative US history censorship

Hundreds of students walked out of classrooms around suburban Denver on Tuesday in protest over a conservative-led school board proposal to focus history education on topics that promote citizenship, patriotism and respect for authority, in a show of civil disobedience that the new standards would aim to downplay.
The youth protest involving six high schools in the state's second-largest school district follows a sick-out from teachers that shut down two high schools in the politically and economically diverse area that has become a key political battleground.
quote:
The school board proposal that triggered the walkouts in Jefferson County calls for instructional materials that present positive aspects of the nation and its heritage. It would establish a committee to regularly review texts and course plans, starting with Advanced Placement history, to make sure materials "promote citizenship, patriotism, essentials and benefits of the free-market system, respect for authority and respect for individual rights" and don't "encourage or condone civil disorder, social strife or disregard of the law."
quote:
The proposal comes from an elected board with three conservative members who took office in November. The other two board members were elected in 2011 and oppose the new plan, which was drafted in response to a national framework for teaching history that supporters say encourages discussion and critical thinking. Detractors, however, say it puts an outsize emphasis on the nation's problems.

I have to go to Denver next week. But I'll be way south of this mess.

Yeah, we can't have our young people feeling good about America. The horror!
If only left-wing kooks controlled our education system. Well, maybe someday.

Well I'm glad to see so many students are passionate about the quality of content in their curricula.
Of course when this all gets ironed out, they should have to make up that time they missed on whatever high-quality lesson plans result from this controversy.

More than likely they just wanted to hook up with their teachers during school hours.

So you think it's OK to "edit" history to make students more patriotic?

American eyes, American eyes.
view the world through American eyes.
Bury the past; rob us blind...

This is either a lie, gross ignorance on the author's part, or exposes the "conservative-led school board" for what they are - which is not conservative.
Civil disobedience has been a long standing right and duty of citizenship and patriotism. Any standards aimed at downplaying such would not be conservative.
Respect for authority does not mean blind obedience - such submissive compliance to the state is much more of a liberal notion than conservative.

do they want to skip the whole civil rights movement?
im interested what they plan to cut out.

Can you think of a prominent example in which social conservatives have used civil disobedience in America?
I'm not trying to be bombastic - I genuinely can't come up with one. I feel like "conservatives" by nature would default against civil disobedience because conservatives dislike radical change.
Prominent examples of civil disobedience are all "liberal" that I can think of:
Boston Tea Party
Civil Rights Riots
Rosa Parks
Anti War protests
Anti G8/Capitalism protests

Poor kids are mislead into thinking they have a say so and a right to demonstrate. Bless their little hearts.

Of course not. It's only ok to edit history to make students less patriotic.

I tend to side with the students perspective in this case because I think the proposed curriculum will be less likely to promote critical and independent thinking.
That being said, it's not much of a sacrifice to walk out of school. I bet many students are participating just to get out of school. It makes me question whether they truly care about the issue or just want an excuse to get out of school.

You mean you side with the teachers who got the students riled up about this. I would bet maybe 5 students even knew about this before some teachers went on a campaign.
