Assuming the friend's figure is accurate, Kim would have to earn some $35 million on and off the course to match the amount he would collect by never playing golf again. (That's factoring in taxes; agent's commissions; private jets; diamond-encrusted belt buckles; salaries for a caddie, swing coach, short-game specialist, trainer, nutritionist and osteopath; and other expenses of the modern Tour pro.) For context, his career Tour earnings are $12.2 million, $9.2 million of which was accumulated between 2008 and '10.

I wondered what happened to him a few months ago.

For $35 million, I would never play golf again, either.

He had a "career ending injury" and had insurance against that. If he plays again, he stops getting that money.

Darren Rovell at ESPN said it's $100,000 a month. Hard to say what is the right decision when we don't know how he is doing physically. But, I would collect the money and pack it in if I were him.

If he's going to be okay and can physically play golf, I'd keep playing. $35MM or $100K a month is pretty hard to pass up, though.
