Most on ST have noticed that Hicks is having a lousy season so far.
Let's try and figure out why.
This is pure speculation on my part.

I think most would agree that he played well in 2013.
What was different back then?
From PFF:

Although he turned in an average pass rush score, he racked up 6 sacks and quite a few QB hurries.
What I'm noticing is that his position is listed as DE.

Compare that to this year.

Defensive Tackle.
Why is Hicks playing on the inside now the majority of the time?
Even on his rookie scouting report, Hicks was projected as a 3-4 DE, not a DT.
It was actually Ryan who moved Hicks from DT to DE, as Spags had him playing inside.

Something else, PFF considers the Saints defense a 3-4 last season and a 4-3 this season (although neither of those are really consistent).
I wonder if the Jenkins injury is having some effect on the way the DL is playing/lining up.

Right now, none of our interior lineman are stepping up to rush the passer.
They're not eating up blocks, which is preventing Jordan and Galette from wreaking havoc.

Has the move inside hurt Hicks?
If not, what do you think is going on?

By the way, PFF has Galette and Jordan #2 and 3, respectively, in their current rankings of all 4-3 DE's.

And yet, we can't contain worth a damn.

I thought we'd have a good if not better pass rush this year.

It has to play a big part. Jenkins eats up a lot of space to free up the other lineman.

Maybe he's the kind of guy that takes a couple of games to get going.

I would love some news on Jenkins.

He was injured. Then he played. Now he's inactive again.

Did he reinjure himself like Stills?
Or was he deactivated because they felt he was playing considerably worse than Hicks/Walker/Foster/Bunkley/Deaderick?

Pec injuries are devastating. It's hard to push and it can be season ending like many of us have seen across the league. He's a powerful dt and honestly was a very great complement rotation to bunkleys superior run stuffing. Issue is, no one has stepped up. Hicks played DE and dt last year, but he's regressing for some reason. For someone so powerful he's getting manhandled often more than not

Very good observations. Hicks definitely helped Junior and Cam rack up all 20 something of those sacks they made last season. It's very noticeable both are getting double teamed this year, since there is literally 0 pressure coming from inside. It's really showing how much of a difference Jenkins made last year. Our DTs really need to step it up!

He's playing 3-4 DE right now, only moves inside when we have 4 down lineman with Galette and Jordan on the edge.......And to me that's the way it should be, either 3-4 DE or a 4-3 Three tech

Has Foster even played this year? Walker has done well, but I don't notice him playing as much as he did last year.

And our scheme really sucks this year. Has Vacarro blitzed once this year? Has Gallett done anything but pass rush? (he covered some TEs and RBs last year) We basically keep running the same damn defensive play. Rush 4 against 5. Have Lofton cover the RB.

He's actually had about thirty snaps.

He just hasn't done a whole lot with them.

Shows the significant flaws in the PFF rankings. They are one perspective of evaluating guys, but honestly, I think they are not that useful when really trying to see a players impact.

Vaccaro last year was a great example. Made plays and was all over the field and kept putting up negative PFF rankings.

In the end, they prove that they don't mean much with things like this, especially when they completely mischaracterize what this defense is by calling it a 4-3.

that's not true at all.

He was green almost the entire second half of the season.
His progression was easy to see.

It was early on, and I think it is a poor system in most cases because it rates very specific positional fits. The Saints' defense has generally been unconventional and thus harder to really rate by that system.

In the end, watching all 3 games, there is no way that Gallette or Jordan should be ranked top 3 as either 4-3 DEs, 3-4 DEs or 3-4 OLB given their play. They have the potential, but it hasn't happened. They have been mediocre so far this season.

I disagree.

It's a very good adjunct to one's own eyeball test.

good discussion, looking at the PFF 2013 numbers his monster ATL game sticks out at +6.8 Those numbers certainly boosted his overall score. I agree that he doesn't measure up to last year by the eyeball test. My question is, maybe we had an over inflated view of what he actually did last year? Kinda like Juneyah in 2011 & 2012. We could see the potential but it really didn't come to fruition until 2013. Hicks has shown some flashes of genuine skills. We have yet to see that translate to a fulltime every down dominator tho.

As a Saints fan, I see Haloti Ngata potential in Hicks. To the objective observer he's about what you might expect for a 3rd Rder- a powerful but raw player that is still learning how to play in the NFL in year three.

I've been saying this for some time.

The guy acts so beastly and the local news talks about how great he's gonna be...we forget that he's yet to really produce that much.
Last year was better, but he hadn't broken out.

I really hope he turns it around and finally breaks out.
