Using ApplePay at a restaurant, would you have to give phone to waiter?

Idea is to make payments more secure, but giving your $700 phone / computer to a stranger that walks away seems crazy.

Am I missing something?

No. It seems like you've identified that this form of payment is obviously stupid given this scenario.

I imagine the waiters will get portable receivers so the payment can take place at the table...eventually.

I wouldn't want my waiters being responsible for the safekeeping of your phone. Not a good idea.

Yes. You don't give your phone to the waiter.

ETA: Given that you have to use your thumb print at time of transaction to prove you are the person on the card, I thought this was understood. You're waiter isn't going to take your thumb with him to authorize the payment.

They're going to have to switch to chip and pin terminals before October 2015 anyway. Most of the chip and pin terminals have NFC built in.

You're understanding of Russia was obviously formed by Cold War Era Bond films.

In China, every single restaurant I went to would bring a remote card reader to the table for payment. I assume this will have to start happening for NFC payments at restaurants in the states

I went to Russia and came back with one less thumb. You tell me where my understanding of Russia was formed.

You lost your thumb in a restaurant to the waiter while trying to pay for your meal? Or did you lose it in that $10 hookers a-hole?
