Someone explain this traffic to me

For the first time in a very long time, I find myself not at work on a Friday afternoon. It is not even 3 pm and yet Essen is gridlocked. Wtf? Do this many people not work on Friday afternoons? Did I somehow get transported to France where everyone works 30 hours a week? How are there this many cars on the road in the middle of the afternoon?

If there's sunlight, Essen will be a shite show.
I've only lived here in BR for a little over 3 years and every year, the drivers/traffic has gotten exponentially worse.

When I leave the office at 4:30 I'll cruise home with much less traffic than the other weekdays. I'm one of the few schmucks that works all day on a Friday.

Friday afternoon has bad traffic in every city in the country that has significant traffic.

I took off for personal reasons. This is vacation time. I did not expect to spend it in traffic.

Friday afternoon is the new Saturday AM errand bullshite day, combined with work traffic, home game. Friday's are always a cluster
