This is my first time visiting the politics board. I just finished watching the show "The Newsroom," and the main character makes the following speech:

Will McAvoy: "No, I call myself a Republican 'cause I am one. I believe in market solutions, and I believe in common sense realities and the necessity to defend ourselves against a dangerous world and that's about it. Problem is now I have to be homophobic. I have to count the number of times people go to church. I have to deny facts and think scientific research is a long con. I have to think poor people are getting a sweet ride. And I have to have such a stunning inferiority complex that I fear education and intellect in the 21st century. But most of all, the biggest new requirement, really the only requirement, is that I have to hate Democrats. And I have to hate Chris Christie for not spitting on the President when he got off Air Force One. The two-party system is crucial to the whole operation. There is honor in being the loyal opposition. And I'm a Republican for the same reasons you are. So I hope your voice gets louder in the next four years."

I could have written that word for word. It precisely reflects my feelings on the modern day Republican party. I am so disgruntled with the GOP that I voted for Obama strictly out of spite last election. I am neither a liberal nor a closet Democrat. I am anti-abortion (despite being an atheist), pro-guns, anti-illegal immigration...I am simply curious if there are many other Republicans here who echo these sentiments.

Yeah, RIGHT!

You're one of those far left whackjob who likes to think of himself as being "independent" because it makes you think that you're above it all. In other words, you're a typical Democrap.

If you voted for the completely inept, unqualified and ignorant Barack Hussein Obama, you're not only a far left whackjob -- you're also a f*cking MORON.

Yeah, because mine was the deciding vote that helped Obama carry Louisiana.

I'd settle for Reagan or the elder Bush, but there is no way in hell I'm jumping on the crazy train that is the current GOP. I simply will not allow religion to enter the political arena on this scale. This is the first time in my life I've voted Democrat. I did so knowing that any Republican candidate would easily carry Louisiana, and yes…I did it completely out of spite.

Uh, no a Republican doesn't have to do any of those things. It's like he's listened to the shitty demagoguery from both sides. Some Republicans act/think a certain way, and Dems say that represents the whole party. It's not actually true, and it goes both ways.

Basically this is a caricature of the Republican party, and he's believing the caricature. We could make one for the Democrat party too. "To be a Democrat I have to believe America is a horrible place where everyone is oppressed, and I have to call Sarah Palin filthy names, and I have to blame ourselves for 9/11, and blame white people for everything, etc etc."

So you voted against every single political belief you have and the religious Republicans are the idiots?

I don't know many Republicans who think this way.

Sounds like a democrat wrote those lines. It's the left's perception of the republicans and loaded with strawmen.

These people are all over the internet. "I'm fiscally conservative and I'm for Obamacare."

This. Much more succinctly than I put it.

Admittedly you are new at this. You need to hone your sarcasm interpretations.

Yes...because Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan were completely anathema to your McAvoy quote.

Oh, wait...they weren't.

It goes both ways. Democrats have the "have to hate Republican" mindset just as much as the opposite.

Two party system blows.

I don't have to look far to find them. My in-laws and every other evangelical Christians I've ever met exemplify those beliefs. If those views aren't predominant, why are there so many high-profile candidates who espouse those beliefs?

As far as doing the same thing for the Democrats, I did not suddenly become a Democratic party apologist. I agree 100% that it goes both ways.

Based on my experiences, I would say worse. And the OP is a perfect example. Sorkin is spreading this garbage, that all Republicans are neanderthals.

So evangelicals represent the entire Republican party? Then the welfare queens represent the entire Democrat party. Go ask them their beliefs. See how enlightened they are.

You could have just stayed home like I did. Voting Obama is a no no.
