Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan rejected attempts to call Turkey the representative of moderate Islam. "It is unacceptable for us to agree with such a definition. Turkey has never been a country to represent such a concept. Moreover, Islam cannot be classified as moderate or not," Erdogan said, speaking at Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies late Thursday.

"It should be known that adopting a malicious and offending approach toward the sensitive issues of Islamic world by hiding behind some democratic freedoms like freedom of speech and right of free publication is unacceptable," he said.

All Muslim apologists hold up Turkey as a "secular" state and a model of "moderate Islam."

I wonder why he would take offense at Turkey being held up as a role model for the part of the Muslim world that is still struggling to marry Islam with democracy. By the way, Erdogan is offering refuge to all the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood members who were able to escape Egypt before Al-Sisi had a chance to imprison or kill them.

"The animosity, unfortunately, strengthens the scenarios that there is a so-called clash of civilizations in the world. Those, who defend such speculations, may go further to identify the terrorism with Islam which is based on peace," he maintained, adding that the situation helps those who try to globalize Islamophobia. Erdogan also wanted Western societies to be more open to cooperation and dialogue with the East. "It should be known that adopting a malicious and offending approach toward the sensitive issues of Islamic world by hiding behind some democratic freedoms like freedom of speech and right of free publication is unacceptable," he said.

A little more context.

In other words, dialogue helps us understand them and not criticize them as much. It is unclear what it does to them except allow them to continue on as they have for over a millenia.

Do you deny that it is secular? Erdogan himself once spent six months in prison for praying in public and Turkey just recently lifted its ban on hard scarves in public buildings.

You conveniently left out this paragraph:

quote:

"The animosity, unfortunately, strengthens the scenarios that there is a so-called clash of civilizations in the world. Those, who defend such speculations, may go further to identify the terrorism with Islam which is based on peace," he maintained, adding that the situation helps those who try to globalize Islamophobia.

So he is saying Islam is based on peace and people like you are attempting to associate terrorism with Islam and trying to globalize Islamophobia.

Thanks for linking the article. It's what I've been saying about you and your cohorts from the start.

I think their definition of "secular" and our definition of "secular" are worlds apart.

Turkey USED to be secular. In about the past 5-10 years, it's swung hard back the other way.

This is why the West should abandon the Middle East and tell Turkey, "Sorry about destroying your empire, think about who you ally with next time, now why don't you go and police your Muslim brothers, and get back to us in a couple of years on the whole issue of moderation."
