Washington Post article and video on how police are taking millions of dollars from motorist that are not charged with any crimes.

In the video the police take $2,400 from a guy while being pulled over for speeding.

There have been 61,998 cash seizures made on highways and elsewhere since 9/11 without search warrants or indictments through the Equitable Sharing Program, totaling more than $2.5 billion. State and local authorities kept more than $1.7 billion of that while Justice, Homeland Security and other federal agencies received $800 million. Half of the seizures were below $8,800.

A 55-year-old Chinese American restaurateur from Georgia was pulled over for minor speeding on Interstate 10 in Alabama and detained for nearly two hours. He was carrying $75,000 raised from relatives to buy a Chinese restaurant in Lake Charles, La. He got back his money 10 months later but only after spending thousands of dollars on a lawyer and losing out on the restaurant deal.

I guess I've been thinking the only people I needed to worry about while traveling are criminals.

In this case, the Cops are the criminals!

I read about this often, and still can't wrap my head around it

You should see some of the stuff they do to us. This past weekend we were just going to a COC meeting a bit outside of Huntsville and they had "traffic safety" roadblocks set up, stopping everyone on a motorcycle (cars were waved through). We were held there for almost half an hour while our DLs were confiscated and they took our pictures from front back and both sides while being made to show all tattoos. They did not check insurance or registrations. All they wanted was to find out exactly who all was attending this meeting and for us to know they were watching. There were local cops all the way to Feds and most of them were more heavily armed and equipped than Grunts in combat. Finally after about 30 minutes they gave us our licsens backs and let us go on our way. And this is something totally not out of the norm, happens all the time.

Pretty sure Louisiana leads the league in this crap. The cops were stopping and stealing long before 9/11.
Are the police in Sulphur still stealing everything they can?

Don't be a dick. Almost and about were used to convey we were there about half an hour give or take.
The purpose of the post was to show how cops harass people who are not doing anything wrong.

This is very very sickening
The police and military looks to be prepping for a war vs 'Merican citizens. No wonder why they don't want us to buy automatic weapons and such.
Again, frick the police! How the frick can they take all this money from you? They are fricking worse than thugs on the street. Police are not here to serve the citizens, but instead corporate America.

The guy that took my DL was in full body armor, including Kevlar helmet. He had a LBE with about 4 30 round m4 magazines and about 4 or 5 9mm magazines across his chest. He had enough ammo to sustain a firefight for quite a long time.

Look for this type of stuff to really ramp up in the coming years as marijuana laws come off of the books. The war on drugs has been a real cash cow for law enforcement and you can bet your arse they aren't going to go down without a fight.

Just be thankful an influential publication like The Washington Post is shining light on much of the absurdity in modern policing,

Good thing all yall thugs fricking deserved that raping of yalls liberty.
Did they just complete give yall no rights? Like told yall to shut up, didnt tell yall why you were being detained, etc?? Either way, it's still totally fricked up. Thats a fricking act of terrorism right there on the citizens. The intimidation factor is through the roof and way out of line.

What was your personal interaction like? Did you say anything? Talk about why they were stopping you and taking your picture; make a joke about them being ready for battle with all the ammo?
I would have found it hard not to say anything.

You should be able to carry whatever amount of money you desire to carry. Any posit to the contrary is anti-American police state rhetoric.
That's the beauty of these seizure laws -- there is no threshold; it's all subjective, baby.

1. They singled us out as motorcycle riders. All other vehicles were waved through. We were told to remain on our bikes and to sit still and show all bistable tattoos while the one with the camera went around taking our picture.
2. They were not rude for the most part but they did have both sides of the road lined with everyone from local sheriffs to ATF agents with enough firepower they could rival an infantry platoon.

Its stupid, why does my money gotta be kept by some smuck at the bank who is just gonna loan it out, while I make hardly any profit off it.
