Because the Exit's are nearest the checkouts.

Most stores have one on each side. You're referring to only the left side. The right side is normal. The left side is opposite to make the exits closest to the checkout. Otherwise you constantly have people running into people entering the store.

The worst is when you are leaving the store, and naturally you want to walk through the door that says "enter", only to find the door won't open for you
