I used to be big into computers some years ago, then transitioned to the 360. I think I'm going to build me a computer sometime this fall, preferably one to run games easily

Questions:

(1) If I want a legit computer that can run the newest games fine, am I looking at around $1,000.00 budget?

(2) What is the life span on a computer these days?

(3) Should I abandon this idea altogether, and instead buy a $300 computer, then get a WiiU?

What games do you want to play? When it comes time to put together your components, jump in the pc thread and let ilikelsutoo tell you what to buy

$1,000 would make a decent 1440p machine, assuming monitor isn't included in the budget.

How do you think my 770 would do at 1440?

for comparison

my 780 can play most games maxed out a 1440p

plays farcry3 at max fine

plays BF4 great at high. If i remember correctly i started getting issues if I would turn it up higher than that though

About as well as a 280x or 7970 in the majority of instances, but just a little bit more limited because of the memory bandwidth and capacity...still doable. Just gotta turn some stuff off of ultra/high. Remember 1440p is about 78% more pixels than 1080p.

I hate the use of the term "maxed out." Everyone has a different definition of maxed out, even though there should only be a single definition -- all in-game settings at their highest, including the highest form of hardware-based antialiasing. Some people consider maxed out as running everything at its best but with zero anti-aliasing, while others consider it to be the highest cookie-cutter preset, which doesn't necessary "max out" the game. Secondly, people have different definitions of playability or are blissfully unaware of their frame rates. Some are happy getting 30 fps. By that definition, I can 100% max out Watch Dogs at 1440p. But if you're playing on PC, 60 fps really needs to be considered the definition of playable. I understand you can get by with less (you shouldn't), but one should always stipulate their average frame rate when discussing performance at certain resolutions and graphics settings.

By the stricter definition of maxed out and playability, a 780 could just barely achieve that at 1080p, and frame rates will be in the 30s at those same settings at 1440p.

Now, one perk of 1440p is that aliasing is less pronounced. But it's still there. You will see a noticeable improvement with some amount of AA. You just don't need quite as much.

On PC not getting a consistent 60fps drives me crazy. That's one reason I haven't messed with 1440 yet.

What size is your 1080p monitor? A 21.5" 1080p display is close to the same pixel density as a 27" 1440p. 27" just allows you to sit farther back and have more screen real estate.

1440p is definitely doable with a 770, and as always, it's the triple-A eye candy-focused blockbuster titles that are going to require the most adjustment in expectations. There are still games out there that I can't "Max Out" at 1440p with two overclocked 290s because MSAA is a killer. Or games like Metro, which have built-in AA and only the super-sampling option, would require a hilarious amount of GPU power to get a consistent 60fps with 2x SSAA. Let alone 4x. Yet I can crank everything else up (and enable physx too, to give my CPU something to do), and get a frame rate high enough that I have to use a frame limiter to avoid excessive stuttering.

23". I worry a 27 would be too big as close as I sit. Either way I'm not putting the money out for it right now.

$700 should be doable easily unless you're running a massive monitor

1-2 years before you need to upgrade.. but upgrading it will only cost you $150-200

I think I've generally kept my AA around 2x or 4x on most games as I felt as though I wasnt seeing much of a difference compared to higher AA settings

but I remember my rig not being able to handle turning up the AA on BF4 at high settings

How close do you sit? I just measured my distance from my nose to the center of my monitor, and it's almost exactly 2 ft.

Size means nothing. Resolution.

"need" is a strong word. Over the years, system requirements will increase, but not to the point that you couldn't run the game. Just may need to reduce settings. PC hobbyists upgrade far more often than they need to.

Not sure, I just know that at times I feel too close with what I have now but that may just be a fov issue.

I built the current computer I am using in 2011, and haven't update a singe piece of hardware yet.

I was under $1000
