How much does it cost? I'm moving from Texas and the dmv said to register the car in LA would cost $1,140. That's absurd right?

Welcome to double taxation... Number sounds about right.

From what I understand, it will be the difference between what you paid in sales tax and ~9%.

Yeah went to do this the other day and my jaw about hit the floor when they told me how much I had to pay.

ETA: your cost is a lot higher than mine though. I have an 06 F150 that is paid off and it cost me $387 to change registration. To me that's still a lot of money, but at least I'm not you I guess

Not that I would know anything about this sort of thing; however, I think it's an extension of the consumer use tax.

Just registered mine a month or two ago. It was over $1,000. Make sure you bring proof of tax paid when you purchased the car out-of-state. You'll have to pay sales tax (depends on the location, in Baton Rouge proper it's 9 or 9.5%), but they'll give you a credit for tax paid out-of-state if that state has a reciprocal agreement with Louisiana.

Bought mine for $14k. Registered in St Tammany and a truck with a GVWR under 10k was $1465 for tax title and registration. You'll pay the difference between TX and LA taxes

Do you guys have to pay that yearly? In AZ my car is about $500 a year and its only a $30,000 car.

Tell me about it! Brutal my wife and I dropped nearly $4K to register 2 vehicles when we moved to LA.

Don't do it. There is no reason to do so.

If ever questioned, which you won't, just say you have dual residence in both states. Nothing they will do.

Does anyone have any experience in doing this the other way?

Changing a LA registration to a TX one? or Purchasing a car in LA as a TX resident?

I was going to change registration from LA to VA. This sounds like a racket though to me.

I did this for about 3 years when I moved back from Nevada until I got a new car. Just renewed everything online from here and had it sent to BR.

It's only about $125 in VA.

If the car is given to you or "gifted" to you, it only costs $49 in LA. I always figured that there would be some loophole using that.

But yeah, registering your car in LA is horrible. Whoever said 9% of the car's value minus the difference in sales tax is correct.

LSU does not have a VA plate. LSU Alumni has failed us.
